EPHS cross country runners win season opener

CROSS COUNTRY
Eagle Pass High School’s varsity and junior varsity cross country teams placed among the top four at the Laredo Independent School District Invitational Cross Country meet held at Slaughter Park on Saturday. EPHS’s runners ran through a dusty and sandy course which bore several turns and with temperatures hitting the 90’s. The Eagles raced over 3.05 miles while the Lady Eagles ran across 2.18.
EPHS’s varsity boys won their division.
Running for the varsity boys team were Saul Vasquez (third place with a time of 17:00), Martin Lopez (4th, 17:15), Hector Alvarez (6th, 17:27), Javier Guevara (7th, 17:47), Carlos Elizondo (8th, 17:52), Jorge Ortiz (9th, 17:52) and Victor Garcia (10th, 17:53).
The Eagles also had two junior varsity boys cross country teams win their respective divisions.
Saul Camarillo won his event with a time of 12:16. Following close behind were Michael Espinosa (2nd, 12:16), Benny Rodriguez (4th, 12:42), Freddy Salinas (9th, 13:18), Luis Vielma (19th, 13:39), Oscar Mendoza (21st, 13:42), Sergio Morales (30th, 15:32), John Cox (35th, 16:26), Jesus de Luna (45th, 17:47) and Alexis Martinez (47th, 17:53).
EPHS’s second junior varsity team also won its division. Placing were Joshua Smith (3rd, 13:39), Abraham Martinez (4th, 14:11), Gabriel Villasenor (5th, 14:18), Jesus Solis (6th, 14:23), Ramsey Betancourt (9th, 14:55), Javier Tapia (19th, 17:37), Jonathan Hernandez (24th, 17:58) and Albert Ceniseros (34th, 21:44).
The Lady Eagles varsity cross country team came in second in its division. Placing were Karina Velez (7th, 14:26), Karen Herrera (9th, 14:36), Denise Moreno (11th, 14:44), Jezabelle Rodriguez (12th, 14:45), Gracie Leal (20th, 15:24), Melissa Velez (27th, 15:25) and Christina Lozano (33rd, 16:04).
EPHS’s junior varsity girls cross country team placed fourth. Placing were Astrid Chong (7th, - 16:39), Celinda Vallejo (15th, 17:14), Claire Valdez (17th, 17:19), Ruby Briones (21st, 17:24) and Victoria Torralba (24th, 17:40).
Eagle Pass High School’s junior varsity and Eagle Pass Junior High School’s cross country teams are competing at an invitational meet which will be held at Uvalde High School at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
EPHS’s varsity boys and girls cross country teams are scheduled to compete at the Rio Grande Valley Classic to be held at 8 a.m. at the Monte Cristo Golf Course in Edinburg on Saturday.
