But it was the Silver & Black Attack who would draw first blood in this contest as Chris Aranda caught a fifty yard pass from our guy, Big Juan Elizondo. Dante Valdez' PAT was good and the Mavs were on the board.
Detmer could not be denied as he proceeded to matriculate the ball down the field connecting with Justin Guerra on a 20 yard strike. The Jess Hernandez kick made it 7 all and we had ourselves a ball game.
The Bulldogs got a stop and a score on a big 46 yard run by Joshua Avila to put the 'Dogs up 14-7, but Neon Deion Alonso said 'If you can do that, I can do it too' by breaking off a 30 yard TD run with 5:12 remaining in the first half.
Somerset got some big receptions from Detmer who was 11 for 12 for 228 yards in this game getting them close before Jaylon Avila ran it in from eight yards out to put the Bulldogs up 21-14 at the half.
Somerset scored first on a six yard run by Joey Sanchez, but the kick failed with 9:21 remaining in the third.
That's when Deion Alonso re-established himself as one of the premier runners in the district capping off a nice sustained scoring drive with a five yard blast for his second score of the game. Dante Valdez' kick made the score CC Winn 21, Somerset 27.
This is where Sophomore all-purpose player Julio Ruiz showed some pretty incredible intestinal fortitude when on a 4th and 9, Ruiz made the catch from Elizondo, who was also on his 'A' game with a 10-11 150 yard passing performance, and taking it 15 yards for the Maverick first down but a jarring hit sprung the ball loose simultaneously breaking Ruiz' thumb in the process and giving the Bulldogs good field position.
Detmer eventually got his team close enough for Avila to take it in an a 14 yard run to put the Bulldogs up 33-21 with 2:44 left in the game. A questionable fumble recovery was overturned on this final drive by Somerset as the player was ruled down by contact.
Did we mention that Julio Ruiz had broken a thumb on the last Maverick possession? Then what was he doing intercepting Koy Detmer, Jr. in the endzone and almost running the ball back for a Mav safety until a Somerset defender caught him just past the fifty yard line? Not only this, but Ruiz got his second first down catch of the game and even held for Dante Valdez extra point after Juan Elizondo scored with :23 left!
It would take another miracle much like Ty Chisum's late in the game heroics 150 miles due northwest of Somerset for the Mavericks to Winn this game, right?
Well it night have happened as Deion Alonso recovered the on sides kick and took it all the way to the endzone for the Winning Maverick Touchdown, but officials ruled that Alonso had possession of the ball before it had traveled the mandatory ten yards and the Bulldogs come away with the 33-28 victory and District Championship.
