There are many playoff scenarios that can pan out between press time and next week, but Eric Villaseñor's New Look CC Winn Mavericks have run the gauntlet of playing Laredo competition in this district having to do so to keep their playoff hopes alive and come out solid after having come back from a 7-0 deficit to knock off the Laredo Nixon Mustangs 21-7 on Friday night, Homecoming Night for CC Winn High School.
The senior walk after the game was that much sweeter as Juan Elizondo, Deion Alonso, Chris Aranda and Max Vallejo took it all in after having given a Maverick fan base that has gone through some tough times in the past eight seasons a night to remember.
"We're just very proud to make history and to give this victory to Maverick Nation, but it's far from over. Thank goodness that we're peaking at the right time," said Head Coach Eric Villaseñor.
The Mavericks have broken off three consecutive complete football games which is all we can ask from our players in these critical times of the season.
The Mustangs drew first blood just before halftime with a nice pitch and catch to go up 7-0.
Deion Alonso was denied after a magnificent 40 yard run when officials called holding on the Mav offense. Then CC Winn mounted another decent drive which saw them get a big time catch from Big Joe Rodriguez on a 3rd and 19 to keep the drive alive.
Rodriguez actually scored on that drive, but it was called back for illegal formation/ Then Neon Deion Alonso made his presence felt once more by hauling the rock into the endzone for the initial Maverick score.
Chris Aranda scored in the fourth quarter on a 27 yard run which ended in him walking into the endzone behind the blocking of the solid Mav offensive line.
As Nixon attempted to make a comeback late in the fourth quarter, Max vallejo intercepted a Mustang pass and took to the house for the final Maverick score, CC Winn 21, Nixon 7.
