These are exciting times in Eagle Pass and whenever I get a compliment from the kind citizens of this city about an article that we may write or a topic which is of interest to the public in general my answer is always the same, I write from the heart and I love my community therefore I try to let it show in every word or phrase that transfers to the page where in our own little way we too are giving back to the community that raised us.
So it's no surprise that another exciting endeavor, that of professional basketball, a developmental squad of future NBA prospects much like the Austin Toros are to your World Champion San Antonio Spurs is coming to our town in November, the Centex Swarm of the American Basketball Association (ABA)!
It's also no surprise to know that the individuals and organizations who are staging this are none other than Michael Luna, Claudio Heredia and the United Medical Centers. The two aforementioned gentlemen were instrumental in bringing George Hill, formerly of the San Antonio Spurs in 2010 and three point specialist Danny Green right after the NBA Championship run in 2013, so giving our local youth the opportunity to rub shoulders with their heroes is nothing new to them.
"We're very excited to once again be a part of something as visionary and electrifying as professional basketball in our community especially now when our Spurs are so successful. Who knows, we may have a future member of the Spurs right here on our team one day, so we couldn't pass up on this opportunity," said Mr. Luna.
"We're exicted about doing a lot of positive things in the community especially with the youth of this community and those of the surrounding areas," stated Mr. Luna, "We want to do a lot of mentoring activities with the youth of Eagle Pass."
"We have a great core group of young talented players from across the US who will be representing Eagle Pass and the surrounding areas in this nine team southwest division with playoffs beginning in April."
Teams in our division come from Austin, Texarkana, Midland, San Antonio, Houston, Dallas, Lafayette, Louisiana, and Oklahoma City.
The first home game for your Centex Swarm will be on November 30th where any and all youth basketball players from the city league will enter the gymnasium free of charge with their official game uniform.
So get ready Eagle Pass because pro basketball has come to our fair city and we're going to make a name for ourselves in the American Basketball Association, the same league that spawned the likes of Dr. J, Julius Erving, Artis Gilmore, George McGinnis, Connie Hawkins, Paul Silas and George Gervin, one of the all-time leading scorers in the NBA all played in this league.
