Eagle Pass XC wins first at Zapata Meet

The Eagle Pass Eagles Cross Country teams of both varsity Boys and Girls amassed incredibly low scores as teams to come away with two championships in this division on Saturday at the South Texas Stampede in Zapata.

The girls came away with a championship outlasting a Zapata Hawks cross country squad by sixty points en route to the title scoring 19 points.

Coach Juan Gonzalez informed The News Gram that his charges stayed together throughout the race and came in as a pack ahead of many of the runners from other programs across South Texas.

Jezabelle Rodriguez came across the finish line first with a 12:40, Sarah Monsivais came in second with a 12:49, Christina Lozano placed third with a 12:54.

Monica Rivera ran a 13:16 placing sixth, Ruby Briones came in 9th with a 13:39.  Jeanelle Fernandez, Brianna Vielma and Alexis Sanchez all broke 14 minutes placing 11th, 12th and 14th respectively.  Maria Barrientos and Valeya Galindo also placed for the Eagles.

In the boys division, the Eagles defeated Laredo Martin 15 points to 51 to take the crown at Zapata with Hector Alvarez taking the gold with an impressive 16:09 followed by Martin Lopez (16:24), Victor Garcia (16:26), Javier Guevara (16:39) and Benjamin Rodriguez (17:20) coming in like the packs they run in day in and day out placing 1st through 5th respectively.

Coach Gonzalez took 12 more runner who came in the top runners of the event including Joshua Smith, Ryan Rodriguez, Ryan Cisneros, Jacob Smith, Diego Solis, Nathan Kowalski, Gabriel Villaseñor, Chris Lopez, Jose Lugo, Arturo Valdez, Mauricio Lopez and Javier Tapia.
