Mo'Ne Davis making a name for girls playing baseball
Whenever someone says 'You throw like a girl' it's supposed to be put down, but this year Mo'Ne Davis is giving that phrase new meaning. She's also made history by becoming the first Little League player to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated.
As the fireballing right-hander for the Mid-Atlantic Little League All Stars, Davis struck out eight batters en route to the only shutout ever thrown by a girl in the World Series.
Along with Canada's Emma March and Lamesa, Texas' Makayla Parks who was in Eagle Pass at the 2014 Babe Ruth Southwest Regional Baseball Tournament in July, Davis is pitching her way into baseball history and is burning up social media.
Parks went 2 for 2 in her first game of the regional tournament and her coach says that she not only has made the transition from softball to baseball, but she has her coach David Derington convinced that she is actually one of their better players regardless of gender. Makayla will tell you that she prefers baseball to softball and her ultimate dream is to play with the varsity baseball team at Lamesa High School.
In Davis' case her latest success has led to countless media requests most of which she has consented to, but when it comes to the notoriety she is getting aside from her teammates, she sometimes asks autograph seekers to get her teammates' autographs too.
"I've been getting a lot of them this week, but I want to be known as a good player on this team, because without them I wouldn't have gotten here," said Davis in an interview with ESPN, "I've gone from a few followers on Twitter to 15,000 and many of them are celebrities."
Mo'Ne was in action last against Las Vegas, Nevada, the representative from the West as she got her second opportunity to pitch in this tournament on the biggest stage in Little League Baseball, Lamade Stadium in Williamsport. America's eyes will be watching.
