Not only did Nederland peak at the right time in this tournament, they had to knock off Bryant AND Texas Tri-County, the latter in extra innings 10-9 in an extra inning shootout on Monday where all eighteen players on both squads looked physically drained out there on the newly refurbished Moncada Baseball Field.
This is how it all went down on Tuesday in the Southwest Regional Championship.
Starter Logan McLeod got Eagle Pass 1-2-3 with two ground outs and a pop-up in the first, but so did Eagle Pass wunderkind Rey Rey Mendoza getting speedy Zack Deckert to ground out to Isaac Gonzalez at second, Angel Castillo to fly out to Francisco Ballones in center and getting McLeod to ground out to Brandon Villaseñor at short.
Alex Martinez singled in the top of the second but was stranded at first.
Then Nederland scored the first run that would stamp their plane ticket to Virginia as catcher Blaysin Fernandez doubled to the gap in right center and was singled in by Omar Mascorro for the lone run of the ballgame.
Eagle Pass managed to threaten in both the sixth and seventh innings when speedster Isaac Gonzalez and Mario Galvan had back-to-back singles and advanced to second and third with one out as the crowd went wild in the grandstands and you could almost taste another late-inning comeback this team has been known for the entire tournament, but McLeod got a big one-out strikeout and first baseman Grant Bombassi made an outstanding game-saving play on a ball hit by Rey Mendoza to end the inning and the EP threat.
Then in the seventh inning, Bradon Villaseñor came through once again with a base hit, but was thrown out stealing by Fernandez. Braulio Rodriguez had to have set a record for getting hit by pitches and he went to first, then Christian Del Bosque got on on a fielder's choice and Eagle Pass was in business once again and it was do or die down by one in the bottom of the seventh, but it was a little too little a little too late as McLeod got another big K and a ground out to 3rd baseman Ansel Castillo to end the game and the scoring threat.
Nederland went on to take the nightcap as well and they will be representing the Southwest in the 2014 Babe Ruth World Series.
Congratulations to our boys on an exceptional tournament and thank you all for a fun ride, Godspped and God Bless to you and to the Black and Gold in Virginia.
