The Texas Sportswriters Association put out their annual list of the best baseball and softball players in the state this past weekend and three of our own were included.

Yet another honor has been bestowed on arguably the best softball player in the history of Eagle Pass as Lady Eagle Sandra Selina Mendoza received Honorable Mention by the TXSWA.Mendoza amassed an incredible 52 stolen bases this season and was in the Top 12 in the State in runs scored with 42.

"She deserves everything she's getting and more.  That's why she's going to play and be successful at the next level because of this level of commitment," stated Head Coach Coca Ruiz, "She's one of the best players I've had the pleasure to coach and there's a lot more in her and she's ready to explode!"

Speaking of explosions, the bat of Monica Flores was the most explosive District 29-AAAAA had in the past four seasons.  Monica, who also received Honorable Mention All-State honors by the TXSWA, had eight homers this season, but collectively over a stellar four-year career, she had more home runs than the entire district combined according to Ruiz, "She used to swing at everything, but she's what we call a late-bloomer and late bloomers tend to have the most success at the college level.  We're really going to miss her."

Coach Ruiz added that she became much more selective in her approach to hitting making better decisions and being more patient and getting the right pitch to hit.

On defense, Flores is a determined outfielder, "She won't let a ball drop," concluded Ruiz.

Also getting an All-State Honorable Mention nod was outfielder Krystal Perez who according to Ruiz is one of the hardest workers he's ever had the pleasure of coaching.

Perez was 13th in the state in stolen bases with 38 and was 21st in the state in runs scored.

"She had the hardest job on the team," said Coach Ruiz, "She had to hit behind Sandra and in front of Monica, so opposing teams did not want to face either of the two, so they had to pitch to Krystal and she would make them pay."
