On the other hand, Eagle Pass is a tight knit community where everyone knows everyone and when it comes to supporting our high school teams, we're the only game in town, heck, even IBC Bank has a Go Spurs Go! banner on their balcony!
If you plan to go to Veteran's Stadium in Laredo for tonight's Region IV Final, take a drive down Main Street before you do so to see which of our local businesses on Eagle Pass' main thoroughfare are supporting the Burnt Orange and White in their quest for that elusive State Tournament berth.
Sandra Martinez, the Executive Director of the Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce and her staff were out passing out flyers to advise merchants to place Go Eagles Go! messages on their marquees and windows and Sheriff Tom Schmerber will send some of his units to escort the team out of Eagle Pass as they prepare to take care of business tonight against the San Antonio Reagan Rattlers.
"The kids are excited," said Head Coach Reynol Mendoza, "Hopefully we can get it done."
Mendoza and assistant coaches Heriberto Roiz and Henry Silva have been burning the midnight oil going over scouting information on Reagan who come into this matchup behind the pitching of Troy Montemayor, who has been their ace especially throughout the last two rounds where he has seen over 30 innings of work, 16 in the Corpus Christi King series (7 in Game 1, 2 in Game 2 and 7 in Game 3) and 12 innings in their recent series victory over our District 29-AAAAA mates the Laredo Alexander Bulldogs last week at Wolff Stadium in San Antonio where he pitched and won Game 2 2-0 and pitched the first five innings in a 9-3 Rattler win in Game 3.
The Rattlers will be up against the hottest hurler in the State Playoffs in Tony Galvan, the newly christened ace for the Eagles who confounded the Carroll Tigers and pitched his way into Eagle Baseball history. The great Lefty Rodriguez who defeated Brazoswood 1-0 twice in the fifth round of the playoffs back in 1974, was also at the Carroll game and said that if Galvan is anywhere near as effective as he was last Friday, the Eagles will get their opportunity to play at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock.
"We feel we're prepared, but it will be no easy ride. They're a fifth round team, they do things right," concluded Mendoza, "It's all going to come down to who's hot tomorrow night, because we're both good teams. That's the mentality behind going one game."
The Eagles will be leaving Eagle Pass High School at 12:45 let's see them off and cheer them on as they go off to take care of business and represent Eagle Pass tonight.
Therefore the time is now Eagle Pass, let's fill Veteran's Stadium and convert this into a home game in the heart of our sister city of Laredo. Wear your Burnt Orange and White proudly, be there, be early, but by all means... BE LOUD!!! Let's do this.
