The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles needed one half inning to demonstrate the offensive firepower they have continued to show time and time again when their backs are against the wall to eliminate the Mac High Lady Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon in Laredo.
Sandra Selina Mendoza established herself in this series as the premier batsman for this stalwart squad of athletes who are on a mission to reach the promised land of the UIL State Tournament by lacing a double off of Zabana Sanchez to put herself immediately in scoring position for #2 hitter Krystal Perez the other member of the D-I triumvirate of Mendoza, Perez and Monica Flores as Perez showcased her hitting ability with a base hit of her own plating the first Eagle run.
Perez' hit was followed by another off the bat of Vivian Ramirez who drove in Eagle Pass' second run. This is when Sandra's big time little sister Melanie showed some power of her own with a two run blast that left the yard at the Zachary Sports Complex to jump out to a 4-0 lead that the Lady Eagles would never relinquish in front of a shocked and mesmerized purple and gold clad crowd of Bulldog supporters.
Lady Eagle ace Krystal De La Cruz took over from here establishing a solid performance in the circle to keep the Bulldog bats at bay scattering two runs on only five hits.
"Krystal was absolutely dominant," said pitching coach Ricky Ruiz, "She was hitting her spots and keeping the Bulldog hitters off balanced. SHe only allowed two hits and had 6K's and they were crowding the plate."
The Lady Eagles will be facing the Edinburgh North Lady Cougars in the 2014 Region IV Quarterfinals in San Antonio this weekend and their first game will be on Friday at 7:30 at the Spring Sports Complex on the campus of Burbank High School.
"They're a hitting ball club as they beat Brownsville Porter 26-6 and 3-0, but our pitching is looking good and we're hitting the ball. CC Winn held them scoreless for five innings, so we're confident we can do the same," Ruiz added.
