Nothing is different in the case of the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles first round match-up against Vela as Cat De La Cruz and Abbott were engaged in a battle of two pitchers, but according to Head Coach Coca Ruiz, the Lady Eagles could have taken Game 2 with runners in scoring position in the sixth inning and no outs, but the base umpire called Monica Flores out at second on an early lead.
"We would've been in business as we had Vivian (Ramirez), Dariela (Velasquez) and Cat (De La Cruz) coming up who both have been hitting the ball," said Ruiz.
Ramirez hit a shot to left and the Sabrecat left fielder made an incredible diving catch, then Velasquez hit a towering shot to center to end the inning.
It was in the bottom of the seventh the Sabrecats got two on with a walk and a hit, then De La Cruz struck out their next hitter attempting to bunt. After this, a freak play caused the game's only run to score as the next Vela hitter bunted down the first base line which was fielded by second baseman Mel Mendoza who was going to get the lead runner at third, where third baseman Nina Flores collided with shortstop Sandra Mendoza allowing the ball to sail into the outfield plating the winning run for Edinburgh.
"We were expecting the hitter to bunt the runners over so we were playing in, but overall this game had good pitching and great defense. There were very few errors and this was our only error of the game."
In Game 2, it was business as usual for the Lady Eagle hitting line-up as both Vivian Ramirez and Dariela Velasquez hit homers to allow the Lady Eagles to once again be crowned Bi-Distrcit Champions.
"Practices this week have been excellent," said Coach Ruiz, "The girls are working hard and not taking anything for granted. They're motivated. Let me tell you, the reason we won Game 3 so convincingly is because our girls were better prepared than they were. They stayed focused and took care of business."
The Lady eagles will be in action again this weekend against McAllen High at 7:30 PM at the Zachary Sports Complex which is adjacent to Cigarroa High School. Game 2 is set for saturday at 11:00 AM with Game 3 thirty minutes later if necessary. The Lady Bulldogs are the #3 seeded team from District 31 and are coming off a Bi-District victory over the Harlingen South Hurricanes.
