On Tuesday April 15th 2014 the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles and the CC Winn Lady Mavericks met on the softball field in a 3 hour battle that became the most exciting game of the season.  It is ironic, yet not a surprise that we may have witnessed both the greatest HS baseball game and the greatest HS softball game in Eagle Pass history in the same year.

It took extra innings to decide this, the final regular season, District 29-AAAAA diamond battle between the Eagle Pass Lady Eagles and the Silver & Black Attack CC Winn Lady Mavericks as, down 8-2 at one point, the Mavs were able to scramble runs in the middle innings to not only come back, but to tie the game in spectacular fashion in their last at bat of the contest.

The Eagles playing the visitor’s side were first up to bat but it was the Mavericks who scored first at the bottom of the 1st inning with a homerun by #14 Ronnie Valdez bringing in 2 runs. At the top of the third the Eagles returned fire with their own homerun by #10 Monica Flores bringing in three runs and an RBI single making the score 4-2 for the Eagles after 3 innings of play.

With the Eagles at bat at the top of the 4th they had bases loaded when Winn pitcher Amberly Garza walked in a run for the Lady Eagles. The next batter ended in a similar situation when she was hit by Garza forcing a second run for the Lady Eagles. An RBI single by #7 Krystal De La Cruz brought in two more runs for the Eagles making it 8-2 after 4 innings of play.

The Mavericks were not out yet though as they scored 2 runs on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 5th and 2 more at the bottom of the 6th. The Eagles also scored a run in the 6th inning making the score 10-6 after six and a half innings of play.

It was in their last at bat that the Mavs got two on for #8 Ari Ruiz to step into the batter's box with runners on first and second and no outs when she stepped into an Amanda Appleton delivery and hit a homerun to left field bringing in 3 big runs for the Mavericks and lessening the gap to 10-9.  Ronnie Valdez followed suit with a magnificent infield hit as she slid head first into the bag to beat the throw.  Valdez would eventually come in to knot up the score at 10-10 with the crowd going absolutely ballistic.  It was then that ace pitcher Cat De La Cruz buckled down to get Leslie Salinas swinging for out #2, then Alyssa Lopez hit a shot to the right of first baseman Sammy Fuentes who dove for the ball and had the quickness to get up and get Lopez unassisted sending the game to extra innings.

The Lady Eagles would not be denied in their half of the eight generating four runs on three big base hits off  of Brittany Perez which included a triple by Sandra Mendoza the Eagles scored 4 runs at the top of the 8th. The Mavericks were unable to match them scoring only 2 more runs ending the game 14-12.

The Lady Eagles finish the District 29-5A season in 1st place with their 12th win of the season. The Mavericks finished 4th.  Thanks to LBJ's 14-2 victory over United South earlier in the day on Tuesday, both teams will be advancing to the playoffs.
