The Eagle Pass Student Activities Complex hosted the 6th District 29-5A Boys Baseball game of the Season when Eagle Pass High School Eagles clashed against the CC Winn High School Mavericks on Thursday March 3rd, 2014.

The game turned out to be one of the greatest high school baseball games in Eagle Pass history and may go down as the best game in the history of the series between the two schools as Chris Perez and Rica Gonzalez were entrenched in a pitcher’s duel for the ages.

It wasn’t since 1974 when Eagle Pass’ Conrado Perez squared off against Carlos Gutierrez before 3,000 fans at legendary Fort Duncan Park in a 1-0 game where both pitchers were pitching lights out with Perez clocking in at 96 and Gutierrez throwing in the 90’s as well.  In that game the only run scored came when Carlos Farias got on on an error, he stole second, was bunted to third and scored on a ground ball to short by Perez.

Perez struck out 17 Lanier Voks and Gutierrez struck out 12 in that Eagle victory.

This game turned out to be just as close, but the Mavericks had their chances early, loading up the bases with two outs when a Chris Perez pitch got way from catcher Diego Gaona who was able to get to it in time to catch Juan Elizondo at home to prevent a run.

The Eagles, then up to bat at the bottom of the 2nd, scored a run when #1, Alex Martinez hit an RBI double to right field bringing in #4 Issac Ramirez for the only score of the game.

Some notable plays of the game included an out at 1st for the Eagles caught by the 1st baseman Armando Lopez and thrown to the pitcher, Chris Perez in the 4th inning and a nice throw to first base by the shortstop Eric Gonzalez to keep the Mavericks from scoring in the top of the 5th. The Mavericks had some good plays of their own with a sweet fly ball catch by the left fielder Ferny Vielma and a nice play by Juan Elizondo the shortstop, to get the out at 1st base.

For the Eagles it was one run on one hit, one error and two men left on base.  For the Mavericks it was no runs on three hits with no errors and seven men left on base.

In all, it was a very well played game as you couldn’t ask for a better game and both teams could have left the field with their heads held high.

The Eagle Pass Eagles are now 5-1, and will play Alexander on Tuesday as they are caught in a three way tie for first place with the Bulldogs and the United Longhorns due to a no-hitter by the Alexander pitcher against the Longhorns on Thursday. The Mavericks, now 2-4, fall into 5th place in District 29- 5A rankings and face Del Rio on Tuesday.
