The Eagle Pass Eagles and the CC Winn Mavericks played their historic final District 29-AAAAA soccer match on Tuesday at Foster-Veteran's Memorial Stadium and the Eagles would jump out early with a straight-on goal by Angel Galvan.
Alvaro Marquez added another before Winn's Aaron Paredes took a chance from 35 yards out and put it over the outstretched grasp of goalie Angel Peña, a magnificent goal to pull within one.
Eagle Pass scored later in the first half on another goal by Galvan to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
"It was a tight game, both teams played very well as it was the last game of the season," stated Eagle Head Coach Juan Chavez, "It is always a very competitive match and the CC Winn side was very strong, it really seems like they're coming up. I'm very proud of our defense who shut down most of their set plays."
The Mavericks showed a lot more grit and determination in the second half as they fired several shots at Peña's goal which he proceeded to stop. After a slow start, the Maverick goalie Eric Ramos also came into his own making key stops on shots coming off Eagle boots.
It was when Winn's Samuel Olguin was fouled in the area giving them a penalty kick that Paredes proceeded to put in the back of the net to pull within one that the match began t take a different turn, but it was a little too little, a little too late for the Mavs as the match ended Eagles 3, Mavericks 2.
"It was a good match, we played very well after some early let downs," said Cristian Rodriguez, Head Coach of the Mavs, "But for the most part we kept it together we put pressure on them the whole second half."
"Our goalie has been solid all season along with Alonso Vallejo and Dante Valdez. we graduated 10 seniors including Ricardo Escajeda and Jose Martinez, but we are excited to go into our new district. We feel we're going to be very successful."
