The Eagle Pass Lady Eagles circled their prey and then swooped down and snatched the unsuspecting Lady Wolves, 7-1, on Monday, Feb. 3, on the Student Activities Center softball field.
The Eagles were led by Kat De La Cruz, their fireballing ace lefthander, who hurled five dominating shutout innings for Eagle Pass (1-0).
The Eagles led 1-0 after the bottom of the first, as Krystal Perez scored on an RBI double by Daniela Velasquez.
In the third, Monica Flores' sac fly drove in Sandra Mendoza, and the Eagles led 2-0.
In the fourth, Kat slammed a double off the right-centerfield fence, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vivian Ramirez, boosting the Eagles' lead to 3-0.
In the fifth, Samantha Fuentes, Crystal Perez and Sarah Gonzalez walked. Mendoza doubled In two runs, then Flores singled in a run. The Eagles led 6-0.
Kat De La Cruz, the winning pitcher (1-0), fired five shutout innings, giving up only two hits.
Sairah Gonzales pitched the sixth and seventh innings, giving up just one run.
Mendoza drove in the final run, giving the jubilant Eagles a stunning 7-1 win in bitter cold. The temperature dropped to below 40 degrees, and the wind chill made it seem like 20.
"The wind was blowing in hard and cold from right field," victorious coach Oscar Ruiz said after the game. "But our girls played a good game, and adjusted well to the weather. It was very cold, but they played right through it. I am very proud of them. It was a tremendous win. We played great."
