The Eagle Pass High School Lady Eagles girls basketball team seized an 18-15 lead at the end of the first quarter, but then were doubled up by the Del Rio Queens 76-38 on Friday night, Jan. 31, at the EP Student Activities Center.
A 12-0 Queens run at the start of the second quarter spelled the beginning of the end for the Lady Eagles, who were outscored 22-6 in the second quarter, 16-9 in the third quarter, and 23-5 in the fourth quarter.
The referees were no help, blowing several obvious calls clearly visible to everyone in the gym, but the Eagles were totally unable to stall the furious Del Rio blitz, which employed the usual full-court press and relentless fast break.
Lady Eagles Coach Ruben Besa urged everyone to come out for Tuesday night's big season-closing games at the center, featuring the Eagle Pass Eagles boys team facing the C.C. Winn Mavericks at 6 p.m., followed by the Lady Mavericks playing the Lady Eagles at 7:30 p.m.
"Tuesday night will be the biggest games of the year," Coach Besa said.
On Friday night, coach Ken Hefner's Del Rio Queens raised their district record to 8-3 and their overall mark to 13-17, after besting the Lady Eagles.
The Eagles were paced by Yuliana Velasquez, who had 11 points, five rebounds, two blocks and two steals.
Bree Carreon scored six points and had a steal, while Glenda Garza had six points, three rebounds and a steal.
Sophie Gomez had five points, a rebound and a steal, and center Martha Rodriguez had four points, five rebounds and two steals.
Kassie Saucedo fired in a 3-pointer and grabbed a rebound, while Stacey Pacheco also connected on a deep trey. Daniela Garza had three rebounds, and Georgina Jimenez had a rebound and an assist.
