“We did drills every morning by groups. There were different stations depending on the skill, then we would go to lunch followed by games all afternoon where we were divided into teams which participated in a gigantic tournament as over 500 girls attended the camp,” stated Gonzalez who will be a senior this coming year at Winn High, “They had a facility with eight gyms one for 6th graders, one for 7th and 8th graders and the rest for 9th through 12th graders. Every night was Baylor night and we all converged on the main gymnasium you see on television where we watched them scrimmage before going to our dorms. We would visit the gym and meet with the varsity Lady Bears, watch them scrimmage and have photo opportunities.”
Our girls held their own against top notch Division I basketball prospects from Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arizona, the Dallas-Ft Worth area including incoming freshman Alexis Prince of Edgewater HS in Orlando Florida, a Parade All-American who even put moves on Baylor’s star guard Odyssey Sims at the camp.
The girls got the opportunity to meet with and train with Baylor’s Brittney Griner, the best female college basketball player in the nation. Griner is an All-American, AP National Player of the Year and the winner of the Naismith Trophy, the NCAA’s top honor.
Mulkey led the Lady Bears to an unprecedented 40-0 record, never before accomplished by either a men’s or women’s NCAA program and the 2012 Division I NCAA Women’s National Championship this past 2011-12 basketball season.
