Ricaro Gonzalez was on the hill for the Mavs and he was greeted by a barrage of Eagle offense beginning with a hit by Eric Gonzalez, a walk to Devon Torres, a doubles steal to put the Eagle runners on second and third with no outs. Mando Lopez, the freshman first baseman who has been torching South Texas pitchng blasted a double to score two foolowed by a shot by Juan Lopez, a towering blast which cleared the fence and gave the Eagles a 4-0 lead.
Javy Cardona got on and scored on an error to put the Eagles up 5-0.
Lopez would homer again after a Javy Cardona single on a first pitch which ended Gonzalez' evening as Carlos Barrera was called in to pitch in the third to put the burnt orange and white ahead 7-0. The eagles would score yet again after a Javy Cardona single and an RBI by Kevin Chisum.
The Mavericks showed glimpses brilliance in their half of the fourth when Barrera got on and Erick Perez hit a triple just the way we were used to seeing his brother hit them the three years he spent on the Mav varsity squad.
The Eagles countered with a lone run in the sixth when Eric Gonzalez got on with a hit followed by a hat trick of stolen bases for the 8th Eagle run.
In the Maverick half of the fifth, the Mavericks opened up with a double by Luis Ramirez followed by a single by the pitcher, freshman Jesus Fraga and a sac fly by Barrera to score the final Mav tally.
For the Eagles it was eight runs on nine hits and no errors. For the Mavs it was two runs on six hits and one error.
The Eagles play Alexander on Tuesday and the Mavericks travel to the Queen City to take on the Rams at the new and improved Roosevelt Park.
