The Winn Maverick Boys traveled to San Antonio for their first scrimmage of the new soccer season.

The Mavericks went head to head with the Edison Bears, a good team that has traditionally been very successful in their district play and in playoffs.

The game marked a new beginning for this core of Juniors that saw some success last year as sophomores. Leading the crew are a pair of seasoned seniors - Erik Ramos - Goalkeeper and Hugo Sanchez - Defender. Making up the core, are Juniors - Victor Herrera, Jesus Perez, Daniel Rodriguez, Sergio Prieto, and Obie Garcia. The rest of the starting group consisted of Diego Cabañas - Sophomore, Isiah Cortines - Sophomore, Rolando Rocha - Senior, and newcomer Santiago Carreon - Freshman.

The scrimmage saw this group take control of the game and even though there were things that could improve, they did a good enough job to win the scrimmage. The Mavs played their characteristic ball control and passing game and saw some success. Great passing and team work led to all three scores in the game as Daniel Rodriguez scored 2 goals and Sergio Prieto scored one.

Great play at the middle positions by Obie Garcia, Victor Herrera and Jesus Perez secured control of the game with their ball control and great passing.

The defenders did a great job keeping a clean sheet, the only score for the Edison Bears came on a scramble in front of the goal when freshman goalkeeper Iker Limon when down with an injury in the closing seconds of the match.

The Mavericks hosted District Champion San Antonio Memorial on Tuesday night at the Sac.

Striker Daniel Rodriguez had a brace (a soccer term which recognizes a three-goal performance), Emaneri Guerrero scored twice as did Victor Herrera and Jesus Perez and Sergio Prieto had one apiece.
