CC Winn Maverick catcher Janie Rodriguez signed her National Letter of Intent to play softball at Texas Western University on Tuesday in The Winn Gymnasium.

Fellow players, coaches, her parents and a large contingent of well-wishers were in attendance as well.

When asked what she feels like to take her talents to the next level, Rodriguez said, "It feels nice, like all the hard work paid off, the sleepless nights, all the hours paid off.

What do you know about Texas Western University?

It's a very healthy environment, I went on a college visit and the hospitality was amazing. It's a nice college. Selena Reyna is my coach.

Who would you like to thank?

My parents, my family, my teammates and my coaches.

How important is the catching position?

It's very important. You command the field, you take charge, so everyone has to follow your perspective of the field, but we all learn from each other.

Do you motivate your players when you're out there catching?

I try to. To the farthest extent, I think I do.

What else can you tell our readers about this experience?

Hard work and dedication pay off. Thank you for coming, to all the fans that come out to the games, always cheering us on, even if we're down... thank you.

The we caught up with Lady Maverick Coach Tony Martinez:

What does an event like this mean to the program?

This is huge for our progress, it's huge for the future of our program.  No matter what the size and stature of a softball player, if you have the willpower and you work hard, you can live your dreams. Janie's been working hard for a long time. This is going to open up the eyes of our CC WInn girls.

What does she bring to this team?

She may be small in stature, but she has a big heart. She's been my leader for two years now. She controls it. She's behind the plate, controls the defense then she's the leadoff, so she starts it off for us. She's our spark plug.

Maverick Athletic Coordinator Eric Villaseñor was also in attendance:

"Any time one of our athletes signs to play at the next level, male or female, it's a huge accomplishment, a testament to hard work.  They put a lot of time and effort into making this come to fruition. Congratulations to our softball program, to Coach Martinez and his staff and we're excited for the beginning of our new season."
