A.D. Ibarra -
Cozel Foster Veterans Memorial Stadium
It was electric. The stadium was at near capacity. Pomp and circumstance at it’s best. Burnt Orange and White on one side and Silver & Black on the other.
The playing of the fight songs and Alma Maters get you going as a fan and former student. It’s Friday Night Lights in Eagle Pass, Maverick County and across Texas. It’s first game? That’s right, Eagles -vs- Mavericks.
Cozel Foster once told me when I asked him how he would like this game to go down each season, he said, “I hope the game is tied late in the fourths quarter and the winning team has to kick a last-second field goal.”
Brilliant words coming from a brilliant man, and while this game did not go down as such, we still remember Coach Foster with admiration and affection as we do his beautiful wife Martha. The saying is, “A man is only as good as his wife.”
The same goes for the namesake of one of the schools playing in this game, Mr. Charles Coleman WInn.
Well it just so happened that on the week of this big game, Mr. Winn’s beautiful wife Patsy went to join him in Heaven.
The contributions to this community they both loved are many and it is only fitting and proper that we mention them and the entire Winn Family in this piece. The hearts of every Maverick and Eagle go out to you.
The scoring in this game some were calling The Rio Bravo Border Buoy Battle featured a familiar face.
Andres Garcia was in on both first quarter scores. First, on a 25 yard pass to Sebastian Velasquez and the other on a five yard run.
In the second, three other weapons in Coach Javier Cardenas’ arsenal got their chances to shine when Pepe Hernandez caught a 37 yard touchdown pass from Garcia before Kadrien Rodriguez and Jorge Sierra scored on 14 and 19 yard runs.
One of last year’s standouts, Willy Frausto, also caught an amazing 65 yard touchdown pass from Garcia before Xavier Barrera came in to get some PT.
Barrera scored on a 16 yard run to put the Eagles up big.
Another thing that must be said is that kicker Lazaro Frausto made all of his extra point attempts. When I spoke to Coach Eric Villaseñor, I had to say that regardless of the score, 49-7, I saw a lot of positive things from the Mavs. He then proceeded to tell me that running back Luis Flores had rushed for 187 yards.
That is a good days work in any coach’s book. Flores got those runs behind an offensive line that held their own against a pretty stout defense. “You’re exactly right A.D. there were some good things that came out of this game,” reiterated Villaseñor, “Hats off to The Eagles.
They’ve got a great team, they’ve got a great ball club, a lot of speed on the field. I felt our offensive line did tremendous job against a strong defense. Luis Flores is certainly our catalyst. Our sophomore running back had 187 yards rushing, so there’s plenty to build on.”
Flores broke off a 67 yard touchdown run towards the end of the game and Tadeo Rivera along with Asdrubal Ruiz looked good out there on offense.
