With 16 teams making the trip to the valley, we saw teams from San Antonio Alamo Heights, Boerne Champion, Mission, La Joya Corpus Christi, Harlingen South, Smithson Valley, Rouse, W.B.Ray Brownsville, South San and your CC Winn High School Lady Mavericks, playing to reach the next level……STATE.
CC Winn was paired up with Mission Pioneer, Harlingen South and La Joya Palmview. Weather was in full cooperation, with a bit of wind, but that you always have when you’re in the Valley.
Day 1: We saw our District Champ playing her game and started off with a bogey on her starting hole. She managed to get 3 bogey’s, a Par but had 3 blow up holes. Her ball managed to find the water and came up short, hitting the edge of the pond and rolling into the water. She shot a 58 in the front and a 52 in the back. This golf course has hazards protecting every hole with a pond or a creek to have to cross. Our #2- Rosina Garcia Zua-Zua . It was tough for her, she was coming up short and gave strokes away before getting to the green.
Our 2 freshman girls kept up with their opponents, were on the greens with their opponents but , the greens were fast and we had 3 putts coming into the stat sheet from these 2 freshman girls. Becca, had a better day than Saida on Day 1.
On Day 2: Saw on District Champion season coming to an end as other scores were at 66, 68, 74, 80. She had too many strokes to makeup, so was just playing to improve her score from day 1. But Mother Nature had a different plan for all golfers on the field. We had some drizzle showing up in spurts, which made the playing field hard to tackle and the greens were slow now. So our game strategy had to change, but that’s golf. We have to tackle what Mother Nature sends us.
"We have to be prepared for 4 seasons in one day. We were again coming up short and we needed to attack the flag in order to help our score. Around the time of the turn for us, we could see some bad black clouds and we had 3 good downpours. Umbrellas were up, but the playing field and greens were getting harder. We kept going and finished up with quite a few more putts than anticipated and penalty strokes started showing up on the stat sheet," said Coach Hernandez.
"Our season had come to an end, but we finished strong and never gave up. Our District Champion saw her last putt for her High School career falling in as her coaches and teammates waited for her to finish her last hole and running to her to give a huge team hug as they did when she won District."
"This team was very close and supported each other throughout the season and always encouraged each other. Our team captain, Becky Baltazar, will be greatly missed. She was the big sister to all her teammates and finished like a true champion surrounded by the team that supported her throughout her High School career."
