Memorial Junior High Maverick Nolan Dean Newman traveled to The Alamo City on Saturday and came back with a North American Grapple Association Title after submitting former champion Logan Windhorst, who had 27 wins on his extensive record.

Newman was able to escape several moves to attempt to lock him down by his opponent and impressively flipped Windhorst completely over his body in one fell swoop before winning the match by submission with knee bar.

“I attribute my escape moves to my training and intuitiveness basically to try to figure out what my opponent is trying to do.”

Newman is trained by Paulo Alcozer, a young man near and dear to this reporter’s heart as he was a member of our soccer program back in the day and has continued to achieve accolades in the field of mixed martial arts and has trained both boys and girls in his gymnasium.

“I’ve been training with him for about eight years. He’s a fantastic guy.”

Nolan is the son of Adriana and Clayton Newman and the grandson of Thomas Cary and Mercedes Leos all of Eagle Pass.
