-CC Winn High School

Our next Profile Series subject comes from a program that is near and dear to our hearts because not only is it our newest high school, it housed the only other State Qualifier in the history of Eagle Pass.

I give you CC Winn Lady Maverick golfer Alondra Meza.

What can you tell our readers about last week's performance?

I am very proud of the effort my fellow team members put into last week’s and every golf tournament we have. Each score is taken into account, so whether we come home number one or not, we do it as a team, and I’m honored to take part.

How long have you played the sport?

I joined the team my sophomore year and immediately fell in love with the sport.

What are your parent’s names? Sibling names?

My mom is Gloria Gonzalez, and my two older sisters, who also played golf, are Gloria Meza and Cristina Meza.

Who do you look up to? Who are your heroes?

My sisters are my greatest heroes. I have looked up to them since I was little and they continue to be my number one inspiration.

What is your career highlight?

My career highlight was making it to regionals with the team last year. It was a great privilege and a lot of fun.

Who is your favorite college team?

My favorite college team is the Stanford University Women’s Golf Team.

Favorite professional player?

My favorite professional player is female golfer Alison Lee.

Who is your favorite female athlete and why?

My favorite female athlete is Alison Lee because despite being so young and pretty new to professional golf, she is still proving to be a great player which is really inspiring to me.

Tell me your favorite shot during a round? Why do you like this kind of shot? What is your strong point?

My favorite club to hit has got to be the hybrid because it is so versatile. You can use it to gain distance off the tee box or to gently chip your ball on the green. And I would say my iron shots are my strong point because I can always count on them to pull me through a tiresome tournament.

Any Hobbies?

I love to draw and make art.

Favorite Food?

My favorite food is Pizza.

What makes a good teammate?

A good teammate is someone who is willing to put in the effort, someone who will not come to practice with excuses, but with the desire to do better and help the team be better.

Tell me about your coach.

Coach Hernandez, or Coach Pat as we’ve lovingly nicknamed her, is special. I don’t think the team would be what it is without her at the head. She gives her best because she wants us to be the best and that’s all the team could ask from her as a coach.

What is on your playlist?

Personally, I like to listen to alternative and modern rock music like Bad Suns, Two Door Cinema Club, or the Marias, but when the team is getting pumped up on the bus before a tournament, Shakira always makes it into the playlist.

What advice would you give a kid playing golf for the first time?

I would tell them to not put pressure on themselves. Golf isn’t just a game of skill and tactics, but it is also a mental game and pressuring yourself won’t let you play at your best.

What do you think of when you hear our fight song?

I think of my fellow classmates and how my closest friends and teammates have become like a second family to me.
