The Eagle Pass Winn Mavericks headed to Poteet, TX for the 33rd Annual Poteet Aggies Tournament Invitational.

A grueling 3 day tournament that the Mavericks expected to compete in from start to finish. The Mavericks were set up to play the host at 9 AM to kick-off the 33rd annual tournament and they kicked it off with a bang. Led by the Jimenez brothers the Mavericks were able to get off to a fast start and cruise along to their first victory of the tournament over Poteet with a final score of 63-40. Jovan Jimenez led the way with 16 points and brother Josue wasn't far behind with 15 of his own.

A quick turn around saw the Mavericks back in action against a hungry Orange Grove team that was ready for their first game of the night. Orange Grove came in prepared and ready for a fight. A scrappy Orange Grove team saw this game go back and forth with Winn finally being able to take a 5 point lead into the half. An early run in the 3rd quarter allowed the lead to jump to 9 but it wasn't until the 4th quarter that the Mavericks were able to put this one away. A very physical game from start to finish saw the Mavericks dominate the offensive glass led by senior Angel Gomez and junior Robert Zapata. The Mavericks took this one 59-45 and headed off to rest with a 2-0 record.

The next day the Mavericks were set to face off against 2-0 Alice in a battle for the #1 seed in the Gold Bracket. Both teams had clinched their spot in the gold bracket but neither team backed down and put on a show. A very physical defensive mindset game saw this game go back and forth. The Mavericks were able to take a 4 point lead into the half thanks to the final 30 seconds of the half that saw them go on a 6-0 run. That lead was short lived as the entire second half was back and forth and saw your local team take a 3 point lead into the final quarter. Some final defensive adjustments saw the Mavericks struggle to score in the 4th quarter but a key 3 pointer by Chuy Rodriguez late in the game saw the Mavs take the lead. A late basket and some free-throws saw the Mavericks down by 2 with only seconds to go before Angel Gomez and Cesar Juarez missed a game winning 3. Although the Mavericks lost this game, they still had a chance to win the tournament. Alice won the game by the final score of 37-39.

The semi-finals saw the Winn Mavericks take on 3A #13 state contender the Lytle Pirates. The Pirates were led by 6'4 scoring sensation Jordan Balderaz. Some early 3s by Ryan Rodriguez and Angel Gomez saw the Mavericks build a first quarter lead that they would never relinquish. Although on paper the Pirates were favored, the Mavericks never let that get to them and continued to build on their lead throughout the game. Full court pressure led by Cesar Juarez, Henry Suke, and Diego Acosta constantly put pressure on them and tired them out by the 4th quarter. Tournament Most Valuable Player saved his best performance for this game as he scored 21 points and Sophomore Jovan Jimenez finished with a career high 22. Coming off their fantastic football seasons , both Jeremiah Robinson and Patrick Solis found their way into this game and contributed to help the Mavericks advance to the championship game by the final score of 72-54.

The finals saw the Winn Mavericks set up to go vs the Pearsall Mavericks . Both head coaches made their adjustments early for this game as the two teams were semi familiar with each other due to summer leagues and previous games against each other. The Mavericks once again led by their sharp shooting and got off to an early lead with key contributions from Ryan and first team all tournament Chuy Rodriguez. Angel Gomez once again came up huge in this game dropping over 20 points for back to back games but most importantly led the Mavericks with his defensive presence inside. Jovan Jimenez also contributed big inside but this game was an all around team effort as 10 different Mavericks scored and all 15 got into the game. Andy Flores and Julio Escobedo played some key minutes and Marc De La Garza scored his first varsity points in this one as the Mavericks were able to pull away late in this back and forth contest and win the 33rd Annual Poteet Invitational by the final score of 75-54.

Angel Gomez was named Tournament Most Valuable Player and Chuy Rodriguez was named First Team All Tournament Point Guard for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks move on and will play the Crystal City Javelinas in Crystal City on Tuesday December 7th at 7:30 pm.
