The stadium sits adjacent to Toyota Field, the home of San Antonio FC, and if we were playing futbol, the Hornets got more than a hat-trick on our boys with an all-out aerial attack that began with Villegas, a 6'2" senior signal caller who could spin the ball.
The Hornets were up early 14-0 when former News Gram Player Of The Week Alan Roli Jimenez returned a ball to the 30, but the Flour Bluff defense answered any and all plays our boys Abraham Rodriguez and Jeremiah Robinson were trying to execute.
Jimenez also made some nice receptions garnering Coach Heriberto Roiz's Offense first downs, but drives would stall and The Mavs would be forced to punt the ball away.
But Johnson was all over the field running roughshod making cuts and gaining yardage after contact.
McElroy scored on a swing pass later in the second quarter to put The Hornets up by 27.
Abiel Cardona, Alan Vielma and Defensive End Victor Alonzo did what they could to try to stifle Flour Bluff's attack, but their height advantage and YAC (Yards After the Catch)!were truly impressive.
This I will say, our fans traveled well, and on a cold and windy Thursday night in The Alamo City, it was one to tough out. As I would say every Friday at both Eagle and Maverick pep rallies for years, "Give yourselves a round of applause because you are TRUE Maverick fans!"
The Hornets just kept scoring like on the final TD run by Cameron Johnson, who was unfortunately injured on his last play of the game, and who we hope nothing but the best for this impressive young back, scored from two yards out with 3:05 remaining in the third quarter to put the home team up 44-0.
Then Coach Rene Ramirez's defense started making plays from Armando Lechler's big hit in the fourth, Santiago García's great open field tackle, Andres Rodriguez's good stop, JP Ramos' (My man who made the last stop of the game, yeah Baby, I was watching) great play, Carlos Mendez making plays, we must give credit where credit is due because no matter what the score was, your Silver and Black Attack CC Winn Mavericks were there in the second round and deserved to be there. They earned it just as did The Hornets.
And speaking of big time players, I'd like to give my Coach Carlos Soto and my other boy and also another News Gram Player Of The Week Arandu Pace for his amazing run backs on kickoffs. This kid is a bowling ball out there and absolutely fearless just like his dad, uncle and grandfather. Pace has another level of speed and toughness when doing what he does and he even made the stop on the last kickoff return.
The Mavericks and Coach Heriberto Roiz mounted a touchdown drive led by my other boy and also a former News Gram Player Of The Week Abiel Cardona who scored the touchdown "de la honra" and Almikar Ramos' extra point was good. Final score Flour Bluff 47, CC Winn 7.
Congratulations to our entire team and coaching staff on s job well done and special thanks go out to our seniors. We have to thank our seniors for their steadfast dedication to our school and to our athletic programs. You are "Heroes even if for one day." - David Bowie... Mavericks Assemble!!!
