When The Eagle Pass Eagles were battling it out with The Marshall Rams, the announcement was made at Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium that they sealed the proverbial deal at 2014, the roar from the crowd was not only beautiful, it was great to see the support for both our football programs.
This is how things went down on Friday in The Alamo City.
The Owls struck first on a 13 yard touchdown run by Jaylin Johnson to put the SA Boys up 7-0, then Mav Quarterback Abraham Rodriguez broke off a six yard run to tie the game after the Almikar Ramos kick. 7-7 at the halfway mark.
Then it was News Gram Player Of The Week Jeremiah Robinson who made his presence felt on a one yard blast into the end zone in the third quarter to give The Mavericks their first lead of the game, but quarterback Jacob Gutierrez would hook up with Wide Receiver Easton Gonzalez on an incredible 37 yard TD pass to stun the Maverick Nation and tie the game at 14.
Coach Rene Ramirez’ Mav D was able to hold the Owls at bay, a team that had scored 60 points the week before against Brackenridge, then it was Robinson again from two yards out to put Winn up for good.
“Our kids are playing confident and most importantly believe in themselves and our coaches that they can get it done,” said Head Football Coach Eric Villaseñor, “We’ve been battle tested all year long and it’s allowed us to learn and overcome obstacles in many ways.”
Of our opponents, The Flour Bluff Hornets, the football coach said, “They’re a physical, well coached. Year after year always in the same position.”
It was a program win for The Mavericks knocking off the 13-AAAAA District Champ for a second season in a row. Last year we beat Lanier and this year Highlands.
Coach Chris Steinbruk said the following about the Mavericks, “Coach (Clynt) Elwood our Defensive Coordinator knows Coach Villaseñor well, they have a rich history. They knocked out Corpus Christi Carroll a couple of years ago. We’re going to have to play well at every phase.”
They can count on QB Nash Villegas, OL Johnny Dickson, RT Dylan Shaw, Wideouts Isaac McElroy, Wyatt Elwood and on defense Mike LB Ben Escamilla, DT Gabe Varela, FS Aidan Tovar and SS Connor Tyler.
The game is tonight at HEROES Stadium in SA. Wear your Silver & Black proudly, be there, be early, but by all means… BE LOUD!
