"Big game. You couldn't ask for anything better," said Coach Eric Villaseñor, "The kids are ready, they're focused, they know what's on the line. We're excited for the opportunity."
"It's football weather. What better place to play than right here at Eagle Pass ISD Cozel Foster-Veterans Memorial Stadium."
When asked what he knew about The Rattlers, the football coach stated, "They're a misdirection offense, run-oriented. The intangibles in our favor is the fact that they had a five-hour bus ride. It's all on the line for them as well. Let's see how they respond."
"Whoever wins is in the playoffs, the other stays home, everything is on the table." added Jesus Lozano, Head Coach Of The Rio Grande City Rattlers.
When asked about Coach Villaseñor's Mavericks, Lozano had the following to add, "These guys are tough. They have a good ball club. They're big, they were in the playoffs last year so we have to play a good game.
The Mavericks have themselves another 1,000 yard rusher to go with The Thrash and Bash Brothers Jose and "Neon" Deion Alonso and our boy Luvin De León. His name? Jeremiah Robinson. Robinson only needed 31 yards to break the millennial mark and he did so starting with the game's first score, a one yard TD run in the first quarter. He struck again in the second quarter with another touchdown, this one of the 16 yard variety.
Another prominent Maverick rusher is quarterback Abraham Rodriguez who also scored twice, once from 16 and the other on a spectacular 44 yard TD run.
The Mavericks outrushed Rio Grande City 316 to 130 and had seventeen first downs to their eight en route to a dominating 27-6 win.
Rodriguez had sixteen rushes for 158 yards and Robinson rushed 22 times for 153 yards.
The Mavericks play the high-flying Highlands Owls "en El Pedregal", legendary Alamo Stadium tomorrow night at 7:00. Wear your Silver and Black proudly, be there, be early, but by all means... BE LOUD!
