Having been both a radio announcer doing color and play by play on an unnamed radio station with my Godfather Frank Chisum and my Uncle Al Kinsall, as well as a PA announcer at both Eagle and Maverick games for years, as a sportscaster on 24 Deportivo and Alianza Deportiva and as the official sports reporter for The Fightin’ Eagle Pass News Gram, these eyes have seen a lot of football.

I will never forget one of my all-time favorite quarterbacks, Chad Foster in the 90’s was in a zone and totally focused against an amazing Southwest Dragon team here at Eagle Field. Foster simply ran out of time and The Eagles lost the game 34-31.

Well in a similar situation this past Friday, and with a District Championship on the line, Eagle Quarterback Isaac Stanwick may have run into the exact same thing… he may have just needed time to pull off the biggest victory of his short career against the visiting United South Panthers.

The Eagle Pass News Gram caught up with Sir Isaac as they prepare to take on rival Del Rio in The Queen City next Friday.

This is how the interview that would lead to this feature on the Eagle signal caller went down.

Isaac, I just want to say that this game was one of the most exciting games and one of the most impressive performances I have ever seen from an Eagle Pass quarterback.

Thank you, Sir. I appreciate that. I’m proud of my brothers.

Did we just run out of time?

The thing is we kept on scoring, they kept on scoring, so basically it was a shootout. We kept on fighting back and of course we ran out of time.

You made some incredible throws and there were some even more amazing receptions under a lot of pressure. How much confidence do you have in our receivers? I have plenty of confidence in our receivers because I can trust them to catch the ball, I can trust them to make the right plays, knowing the plays, we all have good chemistry with each other.

Who was the receiver that fought for that ball and ripped the ball from the defender?

I believe that was Willie Frausto. He made an incredible play, that’s what we needed. But like I said, we didn’t have enough time.

Do you have a

favorite football?

Yeah, there’s a favorite football that I like personally and I let the ball boys know to give it to the refs when we’re on offense.

That ball looks

nice and worn.

Yes.

My next question, do you just run the play or or were you just seeing something on these long completions in crunch time?

The long completions were fourth and long. Of course, I make my reads, but most of the time I just make my reads and these times, I made the correct read.

You were threading the ball, you were sticking the ball between defenders. That what was most amazing to me. I mean, you can’t coach that Isaac. I’m so proud of you.

Thank you Sir. It’s a lot of work between me and the guys that has been paying off.

Ok, let’s give credit where credit is due. How good is United South?

Well their defense was pretty good, but their offense is their strong point cause like I said, they kept on scoring, they kept on coming back. It was basically a shootout. We ended up losing the game because we ran out of time and we didn’t make the plays we were supposed to at times.

How much did we miss

our boy TJ Mares?

I’m surprised we scored that many points without him.  We would’ve scored more points, I think it wouldn’t have been that close a game, but that happens

On your rushing touchdowns, did you see something or was it just good coverage by the Panther defense?

On my rushing touchdowns, what I can remember, they were just run plays. On one of them, it was a broken play, a broken run play and I ended up scoring.

How big were Isaiah Santos and the War Eagle Offensive Line?

They did their job. They do their job every week. They give me time in the pocket to throw, they let the receivers get open. They give me enough time to throw. They’re doing their job.

Have you ever seen a bigger offensive line than theirs?

United South has some big boys. At the end of the day we’re always the smaller team. I’ve been seeing that for the last three years. Eagle Pass kids, we don’t have the size, but we have the biggest  heart and we don’t ever give up.

Was that the case

against Cornerstone?

I think so because they did have bigger guys, but like I said we have the bigger heart and more dog inside of us.

Who else do you want to acknowledge, our coaches, our defense, our fans?

Our defense did why they could they played a good ballgame, but that game I’ll take the blame. Coach Cardenas was calling a good game. He did everything in his power to keep us in the ballgame. I appreciate him. Our fans, we were at home of course and they helped us. They also helped us to stay in the ballgame cheering us on and helped our offense score every time.

Now give me some love for your parents and your siblings.

Lydia Stanwick, my Mom and Daniel Stanwick, my Dad. My siblings are Anton and Daniela, I’m the oldest.

What do we know about Del Rio?

Del Rio actually plays United South this evening. I’ve been looking at film on Del Rio. I think the teams we’ve played before are better than Del Rio. But we can’t get too comfortable. You can never overlook an opponent. You can’t take anyone lightly.

I was surprised you all were

practicing today, I thought it was going to be a film session.

No Sir, Tuesday through Friday we went full pads, we go team on team, get ready for next week.

Do we know who we got

 if we beat Del Rio?

If we beat Del Rio, we’re scheduled to have a home game here against San Antonio Marshall. We’re supposed to play them in the first round.

And we don’t even want to think what would happen if we lose right?

No Sir, trust me. I think we can make it far in the playoffs this year.

Can you imagine Isaac, if we have another showdown against United South to go to State and we have TJ in the backfield?

TJ is a key to this offense and I think he can help us in a lot of ways. I know he can. That’s why we’re saving him for the playoffs.

Please congratulate your parents, coaches and teammates.

Yes Sir I will.
