The EPHS junior showed both superior endurance and a last burst of speed in this race as she led The Lady Eagles admirably.
“I was aiming for first,” she said, “I kept up with the leaders, the two girls in front of me for a mile or so and I passed one of them. I kept up with her (The winner), she getting some distance on me in the second or third mile. Then on the last 200 meters, the girl from United passed me and I ended up in third.”
About the photo finish: “I believe it was a girl from United at the end and a girl from Del Rio that beat me. It was a sprint at the end. I’m better now (Speaking of her fatigue), but it was a heck of a race.”
Official results were: Emily Torres first with a 19:04.6, Genesis Serratos of United second with a 19:23.5 and Victoria Bartlett third with a 19:23.8! United South’s Kailey Salazar was fourth with a 19:28.7 and Del Rio’s Kimberly Gloria with a 19:38.3.
Other Lady Eagles in the race were Analia Treviño who placed 12th, Perla Polendo was 15th, Emily Espinoza was 27th, Rebecca Flores 38th and Stephanie De Leon was 39th.
United placed first as a team with 72 points, Alexander was second with 82 points and Del Rio placed third with 84.
