The Honorable Rolando Salinas, Mayor of The City of Eagle Pass addressed the crowd and was at the fifty yard line for the ceremonial and traditional coin-toss before the game between the Eagle Pass Cowboys and the Eagle Pass Broncos.
But the league couldn't kick off without recognizing three integral members of the youth football movement in this city who were taken by this unfathomable pandemic; Augie Agustin Aguilar, Jesse Jimenez and Ismael Ibarra, Jr. A moment of silence was held prior to the singing of our National Anthem.
Then it was time for football. And when the game began, both defenses held, then a familiar face, Isaac Guerrero broke a run and took it 80 yards for the first touchdown ever on this new field. If you were there, you witnessed a little bit of Eagle Pass history. Touchdown Broncos!
Then there was Sweetness, another familiar figure in this league, DJ Stands sliding and literally gliding across this field scoring from 55 yards out.
The Cowboys had Caleb Dunbar and Geovanni Gutiérrez who hooked up on a couple of passes one for a touchdown and one of this reporter's favorite players, Ricardo Garcia, who showed his talents both on offense, defense and special teams, running back a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown.
Another observation taken from this first game was the play of quarterback Brandon Alvar who showed touch and accuracy on passes both mid-range and down the field to receiver Jay Jacquez. Darian Valdez and the Bronc' D were steadfast and stingy and the Orange and Blue took Game 1.
Come out and support youth football in Eagle Pass!
