Tuesday night was Senior Night at CC Winn High School, and Coach

This week our Player Of The Week Feature is a most interesting one because it features a young player from Eagle Pass who played lights out against one of our most

intense rivals (Del Rio, where he dropped 21 points on the Rams), enjoys playing defense and hustling on every play, but it also features a new tradition for this column, a student

assistant who not only is a valuable asset to the team, she highlights the fact that while she wants to inspire the team, she admires an NBA player for citing his favorite bible verses

on his game shoes.

It was such a pleasure conversing with them both, and we will be following their careers closely upon commencement - which will be next year for one and two years down the line

for the other.

When asked about Eagle Point Guard Fernando Chong, Eagle Coach Neto Reyes had this to say, “Chong is a great example of a kid coming in and trusting the process. He is very fun to

coach. He comes day in and day out ready to give you all he has. He’s a special kid that has a bright future ahaead of

him.”

About Maverick Student Assistant Theodet Segura, Coach Paulo Valero said, ”She is our manager. She’s been in our program for three years. Her sister was manager for four years previously.

When she graduates, she has two sisters coming to CC Winn and one of them will take over. That’s twelve years of managing our program in her family.”

Who do you consider to be your biggest influences? (Could be your parents, but also include a professional basketball player or national figure) My sister America. She’s been so successful and she’s never

been afraid of anything. Whenever she wants something, she goes for it. My mom loves me unconditionally. My dad is the best person in the world. In the NBA, it would have to be Stephen Curry, I

know he’s very religious. I heard that he writes his favorite verses on his game shoes and I think that’s really cool.

What are your goals this season? To be a motivation for them (the team) and to help them out in whatever they need, for them to know that they can count on me.

Who's your favorite NBA team? The Lakers.

Who’s your favorite player? Steph Curry.

College team? I don’t really pay attention to college teams. I would say Texas State because I want to go there.

What's your favorite play and why? (Give me a good long one) I don’t really know any of our plays. I wish I did. I know the names of them but I don’t know how they work. We have

Luke, Dragon, Thunder, X and a new one that he was teaching them recently, but I forgot the name of it.

What do you consider to be your season highlight so far? Why? My favorite game this season was against Somerset because it was a tight game and we were going overtime, but Jairo

saved us with a last second buzzer beater.

What’s your favorite movie? Lilo and Stitch. I’ve always liked it since I was little, so I’ve re-watched it a thousand times.

What’s on your Ipod? All types, but mostly R&B, Hip Hop and Country. I like Khalid, I like Beyonce, Brooks and Dunn. I listen to all types of music, if I like it I’ll put it on my playlist.

What are your plans after Graduation? Go to Texas State to continue my education.

Major? Radiation Therapy.

What does it take for a basketball team to be successful? I think dedication and patience because sometimes you might not be as good as you want to be, but you need to put trust in

the process and everything gets better.

Finally, give me some advice to a seventh grader playing basketball for the first time. To never give up, continue to practice. Don’t ever let anyone tell you you’re not good

enough. Put in your shots, have trust in yourself and keep working hard.

My parents. They’ve always

pointed me in the right direction.

They’ve always pushed

me to be the best that I can

even though sometimes I don’t

feel as though I’m doing my

best. In the NBA, I would have

to say John Wall. I look up to

him because I feel that he’s an

amazing player and he’s a

great example for his team as a

leader, as a communicator and

as a great example to follow.

What are your goals this season?

To become a better player

overall, to help my teammates

become better and I would

also like to play college ball.

And to become a better man

myself.

Four Out Smash. I like it

because everyone is running

forward, so when you’re on

the fast break, it’s an easy way

to get points.

What do you consider to be

your season highlight so far?

Why?

Me communicating with my

teammates, playing defense

when we need it the most and

hustling every single play.

Against Del Rio I played

defense, hustled whenever my

teammates were down and I

ended up scoring 21 points

that game.

What’s your favorite movie?

Creed II. It shows you that

even though you’re at the top,

you can hit rock bottom and it

also shows the heart you have

to have to overcome adversity.

What’s on your Ipod?

I really like rap songs that

actually have a meaning to

them like NF and Eminem.

Those two artists had a really

tough time growing up and

through their music they really

show you their life and what

they had to go through to get

to where they are, so they

encourage other people to not

give up.

What are your plans after

Graduation?

Hopefully make it to the NBA

one day and complete my education

as a financial advisor.

Major?

Business Administration.

What does it take for a basketball

team to be successful?

It takes commitment, heart

from everybody and compassion

for playing for one another.

Finally, give me some advice

to a seventh grader playing

basketball for the first time.

Keep working, because there’s

always a lot of talent above

you. Don’t give up if adversity

comes straight at you and

always hold yourself close to

God because He created you

and will always keep you in

check.
