Traveling motorists should pay extra attention to the work taking place on state and county roadways, and city streets not only during this national observance period but at all times while traveling Speeding and inattention are the most cited causes of work zone crashes, and one in three work zone crashes is a rear-end collision. Crashes and fatalities in work zones are preventable. Work zone safety is in the hands of all of us who drive.
National Work Zone Awareness Week is an initiative started in 1999 and conducted each spring by the Federal Highway Administration to bring awareness to work zone safety issues. TxDOT is airing statewide radio ads, as well as TV and radio public service announcements. The messages will be offering safety tips for motorists to help them be safe and drive smart in work zones or pay the cost.
