If you happened to be in the area of Chula Vista or Chula Vista Heights on Wednesday, you may have been witness to an incredible sight of two gigantic, industrial strength blow torches going through sections of solid steel like a hot knife through butter and the subsequent sparkle of the high-intensity heat generated by these immense blow torches which essentially leveled three water towers in two days.

Department of Justice informs of latest happenings

In reference to Maverick County indictments in Del Rio

Daryl Fields, Public Affairs Officer for the United States Attorney's Office Western District of Texas informed The News Gram of the myriad of sentencing hearings which are upcoming in the cases stemming from the extensive investigations which have come out of Eagle Pass and Maverick County.

First of all, both Richard and Damien Hesles, indicted on weapons charges and Jaime Flores former Precinct 1 Foreman, will be sentenced January 28th before the Honorable Alia Moses, US District Judge Western District of Texas.

The only case that is not being tried by Judge Moses would be Hector Chavez who will appear before The Honorable David A. Ezra in March.

Javier Gonzalez will appear before Judge Moses on February 10th while Marcelo Alvarez has docket call on February 11th which could or could not affect his trial date which is set for March 18th.  Saul Lombraña has docket call this Wednesday, January 14th.

Hipolito Amaya is set to be sentenced March 3rd and Eduardo Rodriguez will be sentenced March 4th.

March 31st marks the date of a busy docket for Judge Moses as Rodolfo Heredia will have a status conference which may or may not affect his court date which we were not able to get at press time.  Alejandra Garcia will be sentenced on this date along with Jose Telles and former County Commissioner Cesar Flores.

April 9th is the date set for the sentencing of Eliaz Maldonado.  Pre-trial statements in the German Cano case are set to be heard on April 15th for a May 20th trial date.

Salvador Castillón will be sentenced on May 12th.  Jose Rodriguez will be sentenced on July 7th.

Flu-related deaths in Dallas County reach 26 

 

DALLAS (AP) —

 

Dallas County has confirmed 26 flu-related deaths as health officials urge people to get vaccinated.

Officials with Dallas County Health and Human Services on Friday announced nine additional flu deaths. Authorities earlier in the week announced 17 confirmed flu deaths. Dallas County's latest report covers flu cases reported since mid-September.

The Texas Department of State Health Services on Thursday unveiled a 30-second public service announcement urging people to get flu shots. This year's vaccine includes protection against H1N1, commonly known as swine flu.

Ginobili lifts Spurs past Grizzlies 110-108 in OT 

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — The San Antonio Spurs had reason to be disappointed. They had lost a 16-point lead in the game's final five minutes and were being forced to play overtime Tuesday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Instead of losing their composure, the Spurs displayed poise as they battled through the five-minute overtime period and beat the Grizzlies, 110-108, winning on a driving layup by Manu Ginobili with 1.8 seconds left.

The Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce has announced that this year, once again, the Cowboy Breakfast, will be dedicated in memory of Jesus 'Chuy' Sanchez, who year after year was a major player in the organization of said event and also assisted in the overall running of the Maverick County Junior Livestock Show. Sanchez sadly passed away in December 2012 after a valiant battle with cancer.

Preparations for the annual Maverick County Livestock Exhibition January 23rd to the 25th, where hundreds of children and secondary-school aged youths  exhibit their projects. The event will be held on the grounds of the Maverick County Lake.

Air Evac to construct weather station at Maverick County Airport

A private enterprise, Air Evac, will be installing a weather station at the county airport which will not only allow the Air Evac Life Team to know what weather and wind conditions are at the time they leave San Antonio, but it will also serve the citizens of Maverick County with a more accurate method to check local weather.

Commissioners Court recently gave approval to the company Air Evac Lifeteam to proceed with the construction of this weather station which will help the company improve its service.

Additionally, the service can be used by any air service who may need to land in Maverick County.

The cost of this technology and equipment, which will run in the range of $100,000.00 will be covered in full by the company who offers air transportation services to hospitals in San Antonio and permission to install said equipment has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration.
