District Attorney Roberto Serna weighed in on a recent News Gram article which said that the murder rate per capita relating to incidents of domestic violence was greater than that of Bexar County in 2013.
A case which rocked the school district and attracted area media coverage last school year culminated after a thorough investigation by the Texas Rangers this week. Eagle Pass Independent School District Superintendent Gilbert Gonzalez informed various local media outlets at a press conference of the findings in the investigation related to a young boy who quite unfortunately lost his life on school grounds on April 24th of 2014.
According to a district press release at the time of the incident the student became unresponsive and inactive, school personnel called the elementary nurse, then called 911 and contacted the student’s mother. Within a few minutes an ambulance showed up with several EMTs. The student was immediately taken by ambulance and transferred to a San Antonio medical facility which concluded the press release. Unfortunately the young man lost his life and the family was very open in the local media and with district representatives about their doubts that the school personnel did everything possible for their child.
Gonzalez informed us of the final results of the autopsy which showed that the young boy died of natural causes. Gonzalez cited the official conclusion to the report that stated, ”the medical examiner’s report concluded that Michael Sanchez died as a result of complications of a probable cardiac arrhythmia which is an irregular heartbeat of undetermined natural cause, no evidence of trauma which could’ve caused or contributed to death was identified, the matter of death was determined to be natural.”
Jose Sanchez of the Texas Rangers headed up the investigation and according to the superintendent he considers the investigation to be concluded and the case officially closed.
“It is very unfortunate for the family and again we offer our condolences. As superintendent you never want something like this to happen in the district and it is a tragic loss for everyone” added Gonzalez.
He also stated that a thorough review of the policies and procedures related to emergency situations was conducted and the staff was trained in order to review said procedures and emphasized that the child passed away from natural causes due to a pre-existing condition. The investigation showed that district personnel responded appropriately and accordingly.
Nevertheless the district has invested in purchasing defibrillators for all the campuses and Gonzalez affirmed that all physical education teachers are trained in CPR and first aid and this year they have been trained on how to use the new defribilators in case of emergencies. Thus, the school district moves forward after being officially absolved of any wrongdoing in this case and continues to make changes to be even more prepared to face a situation such as this in the future.
