SAN ANTONIO –
Did you know you can donate blood every 56 days, or up to six times in a year? The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center (STBTC) is thankful for the many committed donors who help replenish the blood supply.
Take, for example, Una Russell. She admits she was “scared to death of needles” when she decided to face her fears and donate blood in 1977.
She met a young technician named Sara Lopez the first time she walked into the center, which at the time was in downtown San Antonio.
Thirty-eight years and 249 donations later, Una Russell has overcome her fears. And she still sees Sara Lopez just about every time she donates, though now only as a friend. Lopez has moved on to other jobs with the organization, but she’s still around.
“They call me back there, and I see Una, and I’m happy,” she says. “I tell them to always call me when Una comes in.”

The Maverick County Hospital District Board of Directors essentially pushed back the selection process of a fifth board member due to the absence of Board Vice- President/Secretary Humberto Duran as a unanimous vote is required for such an appointment.
The pool of six individuals who were being considered dwindled down to five finalists as Dr. Jonathan Hook pulled his name from the list of possible choices due to his recent employment with another Native American tribe fighting against the expansion of the Dos Republicas Coal Mining Partnership.
Therefore of the five remaining candidates, only Rewa Seth, Juanita Martinez, Tom Cary, Jesus Casas and Luis Ruiz remain.
According to sources, the selection may be made as soon as the next special meeting aganda can be produced.

Maverick County Judge David Saucedo questioned Auditor Sandra Watkins about the monies which were transferred from the Maverick County Solid Waste Facility to the county in order to dispose of the mountain of used tires which are located adjacent to the Caballo Dorado Rodeo Arena.
The tires which are not only an eyesore, but a health hazard as the tires have become a breeding ground for mosquitoes and may be a safe haven for other unwanted creatures such as reptiles, Tarantulas, scorpions, rats and other types of rodents.
The judge's main concern was the fact that this Special Meeting was held on the last day of the Fiscal Year and as far as he knew, these funds needed to be utilized last fiscal year.
"Many times these issues are blamed on elected officials, however the procurement process has been designated solely to the auditor's office in order for there to be transparency," said Judge Saucedo.
"In our conversation with Miss Watkins, she said that she was trying to bring it (this issue) back to Commissioner's Court to make sure we can go ahead with that project," he added, "The holdup is not with Commissioner's Court or myself. It has been delegated to the auditor's office. We want to make sure that money doesn't get utilized for anything but what it was intended for."
When asked how many companies had expressed an interest in the disposal of the tires, Watkins cited there were initially four, but, for reasons which may go back to past issues with the county, three of them have said they do not wish to move forward.
