As of Tuesday four people have applied for the position of City Manager of Eagle Pass, which became vacant after the October 8 resignation of Daniel Valenzuela who left office to work as City Manager of San Angelo, Texas. Daniel Valenzuela served in this office for almost four years. For now the position is held on an interim basis by Gloria Barrientos, who was the assistant to Daniel Valenzuela. Gloria Barrientos has nearly 13 years working for the city, mainly in the area of Finance. The Mayor of the city of Eagle Pass, English Ramsey Cantu, said that so far four people have applied and probably in the next few days will be receiving more applicants. The application process will be open for at least another month. The Mayor said that once all applications have been received they will be reviewed by the council to determine which individuals meet the quality and characteristics required for the position. Then they will conduct interviews to arrive to the finalists. The Mayor said he expects to make a good decision and if there is no person with the right profile, they will keep looking until they find the right person for the job. Meanwhile Gloria Barrientos continues to work hard in this position and has the support of the heads of the different departments to achieve the goals and projects which have been set forth.

Eagle Pass

City of Eagle Pass authorities have designated October 22nd-October 26th Red Ribbon Week in Eagle Pass which is a concerted effort to inform our youth of the dangers of drugs. The Honorable Ramsey English-Cantu, Mayor of Eagle Pass proclaimed this week Red Ribbon Week at a special event held at City Hall on Monday. Red Ribbon Week was established by US Congress in the 80's so that all law enforcement entities can unite forces and resources in order to warn children of the dangers of illicit drug use and the trafficking of drugs. Red Ribbon Week was established after the violent assassination of Federal Agent Enrique Camarena during an anti-drug operation in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Since then, the government has set aside the month of October to honor him and all those who have fallen in the war on drugs. Red Ribbon festivities will go on all week across the city and in the EPISD to get this message across to the students. Also present at the ceremony was Chief of Police Antonio Castaneda and Albert Menchaca of Quad Counties along with his assistants Sandra Vela and Adriana Martinez.

Eagle Pass

A tragic death of a two year-old girl in a residence on Ave A is being investigated at this time as the unfortunate incident occurred on Sunday afternoon in a small wading pool which had been installed at the home. According to police reports, an emergency call was received at about 3:00 P.M. of an unconscious minor who needed to be transported to the emergency room. No details were given as to how the incident had occurred. Unfortunately, the young girl did not respond to attempts to resuscitate her and she was pronounced dead at Fort Duncan Regional Medical Center. The report indicates that the death was accidental with no criminal intent, however Child Protective Services was called in to investigate.
