NEW YORK (AP) —
Stocks are gaining some ground in midday trading ahead of an announcement on interest rates from the Federal Reserve.
Traders are expecting the Fed to nudge interest rates higher at its policy meeting later in the day Wednesday.
Utilities and telecommunications stocks had some of the biggest gains. AT&T and Verizon each rose 1 percent.
Energy stocks fell as the price of oil turned lower. Exxon Mobil sank 1.5 percent.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up eight points, or 0.1 percent, to 17,535 as of 11:45 a.m. Eastern time.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index edged up four points, or 0.2 percent, to 2,047. The Nasdaq composite rose nine points, or 0.2 percent, to 5,004.
Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.30 percent.
