Lieutenant Moses Peña informed The News Gram that the present 'Back to School' operative which is in place as the EPISD welcomes back 15,000 students to their respective schools is going well as no infractions of any major significance were reported on Day 1. Mr. Peña also mentioned the fact that the EPPD and the EPISD Police Department is working in conjunction in order to secure areas around the school zones and insure the safety of all of our students. He mentioned that officers will be in these areas monitoring motorists rates of speeds as the speed limit is 20 MPH, however they will also be enforcing the no cell phone laws to see if anyone is using their phones and/or texting when crossing school zones. They remind parents to get an early start in order to avoid being in a hurry to drop-off or pick up your child from school in order to deter the risk of accidents. Peña concluded that there were no automobile accidents reported on the first day of classes and their normal traffic squadron of two units and two motorcycle officers is reducing the number of traffic infractions, and while the ramped-up 'Back to School' operation may only last two weeks, the traffic squadron will remain in place permanently.

The Eagle Pass Public Works Department informed The News Gram that this week they are initiating procedures in order to install what are termed "Street Prints" which will give our streets a new look when motorists drive through the area. The prints give the aspect of bricks being lain on the intersections of the streets in the area and give the street a touch of color and an aspect of detail never before seen here. These prints will only be installed in the pedestrian crossing areas of the Downtown area on the intersections of Main and Jefferson, Washington, Adams, Monroe and Ceylon Streets. Public Works also announced that due to this construction, some of these crossings may be closed during this time, so citizens are asked to have patience. They are hoping that this 'facelift' to our city streets, if you will, will be completed by the time Christmas shopping begins this year. Joe Cruz, Main Street Director, stated that this project is indeed an important one due to the fact that it will make Downtown Eagle Pass that much more attractive to patrons and potential investors as the Main Street Project is working to get more pedestrian traffic to the vital commercial area as well as looking into the possibility of attracting important chains of clothing to make a commitment to Eagle Pass. All it would take would be one to show an interest and others will be sure to follow as some of these chains may not count on the massive amount of pedestrian traffic that comes across the International Bridge on any given day, especially Mondays and Fridays and a Hollister, American Eagle or even an Abercrombie & Fitch would do well in getting teenagers and their parents in particular to make regular visits Downtown. His project has been busy working on beautifying the area by having merchants apply for facade upgrades and this has received many positive results in what will surely make the area look more inviting and pleasant to the eye. Any other merchants in the Downtown area who are interested in doing the same can contact him dire
The final lucky winner in the “Summer of Love Bugs” promotion was announced this week, Maria Del Rosario Treviño, a local of Eagle Pass was handed the keys to a brand new red Volkswagen Beetle by Melissa Hernandez, Director of Marketing for KLEC.

The Eagle Pass Police Department informed The News Gram that it is possible that they may have positively identified the young man who was fatally injured in an accident which occurred at a local truck stop on Tuesday. This information was passed on to the Mexican Consulate who was also diligently working to assist in identifying the body. Chief Antonio Castañeda stated in a phone conversation with an acquaintance of the victim who attempted to contact him on the cellular phone he had in his possession that the young man may have gone by the name of Luis Sanchez and he may have been from Tamaulipas, Mexico. Chief Castañeda reiterated that this has not been officially confirmed, it is simply a suspicion, a speculation based on the minimal data obtained at this time from the person who called the cellular phone. It is suspected that the three men who boarded the truck, did so in Laredo as the truck driver stated he had come from there and was preparing to continue his way to his ultimate destination which is undetermined at this time. The three men had reached Eagle Pass hidden somewhere within the roof of the vehicle. When they arrived in Eagle Pass at the parking lot of the truck stop, one of the men fell and was crushed by the rear wheels of the tractor trailer. The other man, according to a witness could not be detained. The victim had no documents but did have $900.00 in his possession along with the cellular phone. Police officials have tried returning the call to no avail. The case remains under investigation.

David Simov, the new american Consulate who will be housed in Nuevo Laredo, was in Eagle Pass onThursday. Simov replaced former Consulate Donald Heflin three weeks ago. The new consulate met with Eagle Pass Mayor Ramsey English-Cantú and they discussed several points of interest for the border region. Simov then attended a similar meeting across the river to meet with Mexican authorities. Mayor Cantú stated that the dialogue was cordial and it allowed them to get acquainted as well as to discuss ways that the City and the American Government can continue to work together to secure the continued improvement of the border region. He mentioned to Simov that Eagle Pass is a major port of entry, especially in terms of commercial vehicles and he requested assistance in facilitating the crossing of livestock and cattle. His plan is to construct corrals nearby International Bridge II in order to allow inspectors from the Department of Agriculture to inspect all cattle before they enter the United States. This is an item of great interest as our port of entry is a very busy one in terms of livestock. It has been over a year since USDA inspectors have crossed into Mexico to inspect cattle.
