US Congressman Pete Gallego was the guest of honor at the 2014 Back to School Ceremony at the EPISD Fine Arts Center on Thursday.
Thousands of teachers filled the auditorium to listen to the words of our voice in Washngton as well as to be motivated by a rousing itinerary of events by Melissa Gratkowski and her cohorts at the fightin' EPISD iVision/Technology Department.
Gallego asked each and every teacher to stand up and be counted for in increments according to their years of experience.
"I have the privilege of being a congressman, but the most important privilege I have is being a dad," said Gallego as he wanted to make his point as to the importance of being a teacher, "My little boy is a fourth grader and so I can't tell you how important your job is because when I was in school, the teacher would tell us 'You guys are the future' and I would laugh and say yeah right, you tell that to everybody. But when you think about it, it's not abstract, it's real. It's so real that I see the difference that a teacher can make. I understand that some kids are easier to teach than others. I saw a picture, a family portrait and my son Nicolas has the biggest smile on his face and then I looked a little closer and he had put rabbit ears behind my head (laughter). So some kids are fun. loving, enjoyable and are easy to teach, yet some kids at home really have a difficult life."
This message would be reiterated later on in the program by key note speaker Laymon Hicks, a 27 year-old motivational speaker who also explained to those gathered what his life was like before he found his life's passion to travel the country and motivate our teachers and our youth to strive to better themselves.
