Today, United States Attorney Robert Pitman announced the appointment of Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) Tom Moore as the District Election Officer. AUSA Moore will lead the efforts of the United States Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas in connection with the Justice Department’s nationwide Election Day Program for the upcoming November 4, 2014, general elections. AUSA Moore will be responsible for overseeing the District’s handling of complaints of election fraud and voting rights abuses in consultation with Justice Department Headquarters in Washington.

United States Attorney Pitman said, “Every citizen must be able to vote without interference or discrimination and to have that vote counted without it being stolen because of fraud. The Department of Justice will act promptly and aggressively to protect the integrity of the election process.”

The Department of Justice has an important role in deterring election fraud and discrimination at the polls, and combating these violations whenever and wherever they occur. The Department’s long-standing Election Day Program furthers these goals, and also seeks to ensure public confidence in the integrity of the election process by providing local points of contact within the Department for the public to report possible election fraud and voting rights violations while the polls are open on Election Day.

Federal law protects against such crimes as intimidating or bribing voters, buying and selling votes, impersonating voters, altering vote tallies, stuffing ballot boxes, and marking ballots for voters against their wishes or without their input. It also contains special protections for the rights of voters and provides that they can vote free from acts that intimidate or harass them. For example, actions of persons designed to interrupt or intimidate voters at polling places by questioning or challenging them, or by photographing or videotaping them, under the pretext that these are actions to uncover illegal voting may violate federal voting rights law. Further, federal law protects the right of voters to mark their own ballot or to be assisted by a person of their choice.

In order to respond to complaints of election fraud or voting rights abuses on November 4, 2014, and to ensure that such complaints are directed to the appropriate authorities, United States Attorney Pitman stated that AUSA/DEO Moore will be on duty in this District while the polls are open. He can be reached by the public at the following telephone number: (210) 384-7136.

In addition, the FBI will have special agents available in each field office and resident agency throughout the country to receive allegations of election fraud and other election abuses on Election Day. The San Antonio FBI field office can be reached by the public at (210) 225-6741. Complaints about possible violations of the federal voting rights laws can be made directly to the Civil Rights Division’s Voting Section in Washington by phone at 1-800-253-3931 or (202) 307-2767, by fax at (202) 307-3961, by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. United States Attorney Pitman said, “Ensuring free and fair elections depends in large part on the cooperation of the American electorate. It is imperative that those who have specific information about discrimination or election fraud make that information available immediately to my Office, the FBI, or the Civil Rights Division.”

-Cozel Foster Veteran's Memorial Stadium

The Eagle Pass Eagles once again established themselves as a favorite to repeat as playoff contenders with an impressive come-from-behind victory over the visiting Laredo United South Panthers on Thursday night at Cozel Foster Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Ty Chisum and highly skilled receiver Chris Cabello traded scores in the first half of play as Panther QB Richie Hernandez threaded the needle several times on double coverage attempting to get the ball to one of the premier wide outs in the district.

We recall lat season when Cabello's brother was at the helm of the Panther offense getting the ball to his brother while running the option and zone read offense to perfection, however this year's United South squad came to play and play they did drawing first blood on a long pass play from Hernandez to Cabello with 10:34 remaining in the opening quarter.

A heavy hit from the Panther linebacker on Memo Hernandez caused the ball to come out on the Eagle 29 giving the Panthers good field position setting up a 12 yard TD pass to Jesus Mojada putting them up big.

-International Bridge I

When reports came in of a pickup truck that had dangled off of International Bridge I before plunging back-first almost 40 feet below, it had to be seen to be believed.  According to Eagle Pass Police Chief Alberto Guajardo, the accident occurred when a 1984 Ford F-150 hit a vehicle while coming back from Piedras Negras between 9:30 and 10:00 PM.  The Ford driven by 80 year-old Fidencio Roque proceeded to crash into the chain link fence taking out an entire section of fence before hanging on a proverbial thread, an iron support wire which momentarily held the vehicle suspended in the air before giving way, snapping and causing the truck to fall to Shelby Park below.
