This group of ladies, members of the Pan American Round Table of Eagle Pass, were on hand Saturday March 7, 2015 for their regular business meeting, at which time they elected new officers for 2015-2017. Elected unanimously were Director Gricelda (Guichi) Becker-Perez, Associate Director Rewa Seth, Recording Secretary Adelina Roman, Corresponding Secretary Romelia Guajardo, Treasurer Sharon Smith, Assistant Treasurer Joan Garcia, Custodian Elva Benavides, Historian Marge Munt, Parliamentarian Anita Williams and Protocol Mary Pete Ramirez. Plans for Pan American Day were discussed and this event will be held Saturday, April 18 at the IBC Bank. This month’s program on Panama was presented by Guichi Becker-Perez and Norma Booth. Hostesses for the meeting were Lydia Lerma and Irma Torralba.

The internal conflict between the Court of commissioners and county auditor Maverick, Fidencio Ortiz, comes to an end today when district judges, The Honorable Cynthia Muñiz and The Honorable Amado Abascal meet with visiting judge The Honorable Camile Dubose of Uvalde, who was assigned by the office of the Governor of Texas.
The meeting is to be held this morning at 9:00 AM, in the Maverick County Courthouse, where they will determine if in fact Maverick County will renew the contract with Maverick County Auditor Fidencio Ortiz.
Ortiz was appointed as auditor on September 24, 2012 by judges Muñiz and Abascal for a term of two years, after the post was left vacant.
Lately the county has attempted to highlight a series of irregularities in the county's accounts, dating back more than 10 years, which has impeded the submittal and/or delay of both the 2012 and 2013 audits.
The county has sought the services of several outside auditing, accounting firms and legal counsels while dealing with this issue, spending thousands of dollars to review the statements of the county which have caused 17 people to be indicted and convicted of bribery and kickbacks since as early as 2009.
One of the defendants, a former employee of the Maverick County Auditor's Office, told The Honorable Alia Moses, US District Judge that she had told her boss (not specifying whether she was referring to the Maverick County Auditor at the time or the then Maverick County judge) something was not right, but was ignored and that she had not approved the contracts which had led to her indictment and subsequent arrest before being told that this was a sentencing and not the trial.
When trustees and bond holders of the Maverick County Detention Center recently chose to suddenly cease negotiations with former financial advisors Southwestern Capital Markets, communication closed completely and Commissioner's Court ended their relationship with the firm and hired another, First Southwest Capital, in a meeting held January 29th. It is not clear as to who has been dealing with the financial affairs of the Public Facilities Corporation with the trustee between January 29th and the 5th of March, the final day of services as financial advisor for Maverick County for SCM.
In an attempt to provide a solution to the request of county authorities, the district judges will break the deadlock in the case of restoring or ending Maverick County's relationship with Ortiz this morning.

The 2014 Accountability Ratings are in and the EPISD had the privilege of handing out awards to the principals of all the schools who received recognition on Tuesday. Both CC Winn and Eagle Pass High Schools received the distinction of being included in the Top 25% of secondary schools in closing their academic performance gaps while EPHS also achieved the same in Postsecondary Readiness.
EPJ received the same recognition as the high school in terms of Postsecondary Readiness and Memorial Junior High was awarded for Top 25% Student Progress.
At the Elementary level all 15 of our schools Met Standard according to the Texas Education Agency. Twelve of the fifteen also received Academic Achievement in certain content areas
"The EPISD met standard and any campuses that these ratings apply to were recognized," stated Board President Ignacio Saucedo, "Fifteen of our schools met standard and twelve of them had special distinctions in the differentiating content areas."
"We're prepared for testing that is coming up and I know the teachers have done a good job preparing our students. We ask that our parents make sure their children get a good night's sleep and eat a good breakfast in order to be ready to do their best."
STAAR testing begins March 30th.

A security guard for the Eagle Pass Housing Authority was very instrumental in the apprehension of a seventeen year-old subject who was driving a stolen vehicle.
According to Humberto O Garza, Public Information Officer for the EPPD, the incident occurred on Tuesday at approximately 1:35 AM when the security guard called in a vehicle which was driving recklessly in a red in color Chevy Colorado in the area of Mesa Drive.
When the vehicle left the area of the housing authority's projects, the security guard continued to follow the vehicle and kept in communication with PD via radio until officers arrived in the area.
The officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but it refused to stop resulting in a high speed chase through various streets on the south side of town.
The pursuit culminated at a Dead End cul de sac on Edna Street where the driver of the pickup had not realized the street had no exit.
The driver identified as 17 year-old Alberto Sanchez got off the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, but was apprehended after a short chase.
It was determined that the vehicle driven was in fact a vehicle reported stolen on the 16th.
Sanchez was charged with evading arrest and possession of a stolen vehicle, processed and taken to the Tom Bowles Detention Center on a combined $17,000 bond.

Saturday morning a report was received that an Eagle Pass youth had been taken against his will by a subject identified as Abraham Ponce, who had dragged out a young man who was in Bar La Cueva del Oso, taking him to an unknown destination.
A friend of the kidnapped youth said they had arrived in a 2014 Camaro and utilizing the GPS, family members managed to locate the vehicle in front of a Sanchez Garza furniture location on Lazaro Cardenas Avenue and San Tomas, where the Camaro was stopped.
Prosecutor, Martin Cantu Chavez said they had no knowledge of the incident and the Piedras Negras Police Department was not notified until Sunday afternoon.

Chamber of Commerce Directress Sandra Martinez is warning citizens to beware of a social media hoax in reference to International Friendship Festival Carnival wristbands which are supposedly on sale if you access a Facebook link.
This is a scam and in no way should you purchase or authorize anyone to use your information, credit cards and/or debit card information to do so.
"We need your help to get the following message out to the community," said Martinez in an e-mail, "A caller to the Chamber has advised us that wristbands for the upcoming International Friendship Festival carnival are being sold over Facebook. We have checked with the carnival owners and have been informed they have not even decided if they will be selling the wristbands!"
She added that someone is misleading citizens to purchase these wristbands from that Facebook page and it is in fact a scam and urges people to use caution.
