The Eagle Pass News Gram was on hand Saturday to bear witness to an event that doesn't come around too often, that of the celebration of someone's 90th birthday.
The lovely and fortunate birthday girl was none other than Maria Briones de Gonzalez, who was born on September 21, 1925 in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Maria married Pedro Gonzalez in November of 1945 and the marriage produced five children who were there to help her celebrate.

The Special Meeting scheduled for this afternoon of Maverick County Commissioner's Court will deal with several key issues, the most prominent being the impending lawsuit by UMB Bank v. the Maverick County Public Facility Corporation.
The Western District of Texas has handed down a ruling which essentially cripples the UMB Bank and the bond holders of the $42,255,000.00 of Maverick County Public Facility Corporation Project Revenue Bonds as The Honorable Alia Moses denied their motion to seal all records involving this case which was filed on August 3rd, not even a week after Maverick County set a thirty-day notice to the trustee of the bonds that it was pulling out of the Maverick County Detention Center.
The complaint filed by UMB Bank, N.A. which is based out of Kansas City, Missouri, cites that the PFC was short on a payment in February of $1,415,000.00 and only forwarded $707,546.67.
"Because UMB has been advised that the Marshal's Service ceased housing detainees in the Project as of July 24th, 2015, UMB reasonably believes and expects there will be no future Project Revenues available to pay future principal and interest payments due under the Indenture...UMB is therefore entitled to bring forth this lawsuit..." says the complaint filed by Richard D. Anigan and Jason N. Jorda of the Haynes and Boone Law Firm out of Dallas.
Maverick County is represented by Robert W. Wilson and Mark A. Sánchez of Sanchez & Wilson out of San Antonio.
On August 10th, the Court signed an Order directing the Clerk to issue Prejudgment Writs of garnishment to International Bank of Commerce, the United States Marshal's Service and Maverick County, Texas. On August 13th, the Plaintiff filed a Motion to Seal which was recently denied by Judge Moses and is the final action item on this case. Commissioner's Court will discuss this matter today at their Special Meeting which is scheduled for 5:00 PM.

An Eagle Pass man filed assault charges on Tuesday when he informed police that while he was working at a local residence, the owner of the residence arrived and began to argue with his employee.
El vocero del departamento de policia Humberto Garza Jr. nos informó de un incidente del 22 de septiembre a la 1:32a.m. donde llamaron al departamento de policia y acudieron los oficiales al bar The Draft ubicado por la Bibb St. En el lugar había un hombre bañado en sangre, según la información: 2 damas se estaban peleando cuando esta persona se metió para separarlas y otro hombre por la espalda con una botella de cerveza lo golpeó en la cabeza, y despues huyo rapidamente del bar. El herido debido a los golpes tuvo que ser llevado al cuarto de emergencia. El nombre de la persona no se a dado a conocer ya que se está investigando este incidente.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the Del Rio Port of Entry seized more than $10,000 in undeclared currency from a U.S. citizen living in Mexico early this week.
“Large amounts of currency may be imported and exported with the proper documentation,” said Port Director Alberto D. Perez, Del Rio Port of Entry. “Failure to report international transit of $10,000 or more could mean forfeiture of funds and criminal sanctions.”
Around 5 p.m. Sept. 21, CBP officers at Del Rio International Bridge, inspected a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta as it departed the United States bound for Mexico. During inspection, officers discovered a total of $10,436 in U.S. currency in the possession of a passenger in the vehicle.
The passenger, an 18-year-old male U.S. Citizen residing in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations for federal prosecution on a charge of 31 U.S. Code § 5332 - bulk cash smuggling into or out of the United States.

CBP officers screen all people, vehicles and goods entering the United States while facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel. Their mission also includes carrying out border-related duties, including narcotics interdiction, enforcing immigration and trade laws, and protecting the nation's food supply and agriculture industry from pests and diseases.
CBP’s Del Rio Port of Entry is part of the Joint Task Force-West South Texas Corridor, which leverages federal, state and local resources to combat transnational criminal organizations.
Sam De La Rosa, retired Marvel and DC comic book artist was gracious enough to answer a few questions during his Eagle Pass visit to our local comic bookstore Heroes to the Rescue located on 1901 E Garrison St. Many community members were treated to Sam signing copies of his most notable work as well as answering questions from the eager fans.

PIEDRAS NEGRAS.- Autoridades policiacas buscaban afanosamente al individuo que asaltó a mano armada la Sucursal Buenavista de Bancomer, de donde se llevó un botín de $30,000.00 (treinta mil pesos), en hechos ocurridos el pasado lunes a las 8:45 de la mañana, apenas 15 minutos después de que la institución había abierto sus puertas al público.
Un sujeto que vestía un short a cuadros y una camiseta azul, encapuchado y con una metralleta corta entró al banco gritando “Esto es un asalto” y ordenó a los clientes que se tiraran al piso boca abajo, mientras penetraba hasta una de las cajas al fondo del edificio y le ordenó a la cajera que le entregara el dinero que tenía en el mostrador.
A esa hora aproximadamente una veintena de personas se encontraban en el interior del banco tirados al piso y una vez que estuvieron seguros de que el asaltante había huido se levantaron, todos ellos asustados y nerviosos por lo que había ocurrido. En entrevista a los noticieros de radio, dieron a conocer sus impresiones aun que poco fue lo que pudieron ver, pues nadie quería voltear el rostro para ver que era lo que estaba ocurriendo, por temor a ser lastimados por el solitario sujeto. Lo que si dijeron es que el asaltante nunca los amenazó ni les despojó de sus pertenencias.
Lo que si alcanzaron a escuchar fue que dijo que el asunto no era contra ellos, sino contra el banco. Alguien, no dijeron quien, dijo a las auto-ridades que llegaron para investigar el asalto, que el asaltante huyó con rumbo desconocido a bordo de una bicicleta.
Esto indica que el furtivo asalta-bancos conocía a fondo el movimiento del banco que se localiza en la avenida Lázaro Cardenas, en donde el tráfico automovilistico es muy intenso a todas horas del día y de la noche, dificultando la entrada y salida de vehiculos al estacionamiento, lo cual pudo hacer muy fácilmente usando una bicicleta y huyendo con rumbo desconocido.
El informe realizado por un ciudadano de Eagle Pass la mañana del lunes pudo haber evitado una tragedia ya que una mujer sentada en su camioneta pudo haber estado contemplando suicidarse
Una gran mobilización de agentes del orden llegaron a la cuadra 900 de la calle Main en el estacionamiento de IBC.

"We want our doctors to have more time, quality time when seeing their patients. It's part of our goal to insure our patients the best health care possible," said Duran.
