The Maverick County Hospital District Board of Trustees held a meeting on Tuesday in order to finalize the 2015-2016 Tax Rate.

Interim Board Chairman Juan Manuel Farias informed us of the details of Tuesday's meeting.

"There were two items on the agenda today including the discussion and possible action of adopting the 2015-2016 Maverick County Hospital District tax rate.  Dr. Hixson proposed a $.09 per $100.00 value of your property as a motion.  I stepped down and seconded the motion, Mr. Duran took over, took the vote and it passed 2-1, so we are increasing taxes by one cent."

According to Farias, the one cent increase will alleviate having to go into their reserves in order to essentially balance a budget as it has been done in years prior.

"This will give us the opportunity to make a tremendous dent on the deficit.  We always have a balanced budget because we do have money in our reserves which sometimes is used to balance the budget.  That is taxpayers' money.  The health services we provide cost a lot of money.

"The medicines for combating cancer are very costly and the services we have are costly, so we have to take actions that are not popular.  Nobody wants to increase taxes.  We brought it down from $.18 to $.07 and in the past five to six years we've increased them back by two cents.  So people are still ahead.

"If you compare $.09 to $.18, the people are still way ahead.  We will have to watch our spending."

The glass truck hit the front ends of four parked vehicles in front of the doctor's office which always has a heavy flow of patient traffic on any given day before plowing into the sign in front of the establishment.

-Loop 480

Big news in terms of touching the future in Maverick County.  Raul Leal of the Texas Department of transportation has confirmed the preliminary plans for the eagerly awaited completion of Loop 480.
As you know, the project has been deemed unfunded for the past two years, however, sources indicated on Monday that talks of the impending study to determine the scope of the project as well as a possible price tag on the completion  of this stretch of 15-20 miles of highway which according to County Commissioner Robert Ruiz would be important not only for the transport of goods to and from Mexico, but to any plans for a third international bridge.
"This is a project that would help not only the transport of goods and services, but it will also help in the exporting of Texas products into Mexico," said Ruiz.
According to the commissioner, 1/3 of all exports from the State of Texas go to Mexico.
"Texas depends a lot on commercial trade with Mexico.  This will definitely open the doors for negotiations in order to one day have a third international bridge."
"This project is in the development stage whereby we are about to begin the preparation of the plans, specifications and estimates," said Leal.
"We are being proactive on our approach to this currently unfunded project in anticipation that the project will be ready when mobility funding becomes available."
State Representative Alfonso Nevarez also had the following to add in reference to the project, "We are excited that Loop 480 is nearing its final stages.  This project is incredibly important to the region and we thank all the contributors that continue to work to make it possible."
