Lady Mavericks Win First District Game

Thursday, 28 February 2019 00:53 Published in February 2019

The CC Winn Lady

Mavericks won their first district

ball game against the Floresville

Jaguars on Tuesday in Floresville.

Coach JJ Iracheta

informed The News Gram that

Floresville brought their best pitcher

to face the Silver & Black in this

very important matchup.

“They brought their starting

pitcher back, Jordan Treviño,”

said Iracheta, “It was a tough

game. We were down the whole

game. In the sixth, Anissa pinch hit

for Amy Flores and started a rally

that started our run production.”

This is how the game went

down.

Floresville scored the first

two runs of the ball game in the

third and fourth frames when

Brittany Danielle walked, stole

second, went to third on a wild

pitch and came in to score on a hit

by Amber Garcia.

In the fourth, Mariella

Uriegas also got on on a walk and

went to second on a hit by Bella

Cook and a Maverick error

allowed the run to score.

The Lady Mavericks finally

got to Treviño in the top of the

fifth when Ariana Soto was hit by a

pitch, went to second on a fielder’s

choice to sister Briana. They both

advanced on a passed ball. The

twins came in to score on a hit by

Thiana Reyes.

Then in the bottom of the

fifth, Danielle reached on a hit to

right field, stole second and went

to third on a passed ball. She would

score on a sacrifice fly by Marissa

Cadena to go up 3-2.

It was in the sixth that CC

Winn would attack and go up for

good when Anissa Salazar doubled

into right and Amy Flores would

reach on an error - scoring Salazar.

Then Ariana Soto would double

into left. Plating Flores and Soto

would be driven in by guess who?

That’s right, the other half of the

Dynamic Duo, Briana would bring

in the fifth run of the game for The

Silver & Black Attack.

Coach “Cheta” said they

were able to small ball it the rest of

the way, “Then we were able to

manufacture some runs. We built

momentum after this.”

Martha Garcia, Mia

Uriegas and Ana Lopez would

score in the seventh to make the

game 8-3.

The Lady Mavericks went

up 5-3 at that point and added three

more insurance runs to seal the

proverbial deal at 8-3.

Mavericks Receive All-District Honors

Thursday, 28 February 2019 00:52 Published in February 2019

Coach Paulo Valero

informed The News Gram that six of

his players received All-District 28-

AAAAA honors this week.

“Moe Gaytan got 2nd Team

All-District and averaged 12 points

per game with seven rebounds, four

assists and two steals. Jairo

Maldonado was also named to the

2nd Team; averaging 12 points, five

rebounds, three assists and two

steals per game.”

Diego Rodriguez, Eduardo

Nava and Eric Sanchez received

Honorable Mention nods this season

while Sanchez and Germán

Velasquez were named to the

District 28-AAAAA All Academic

Team.

CC Winn senior Diego Ibarra performed

well on day 2 of his swan song and

final Border Olympics Tournament, overcoming

the elements - the fast greens at the

Max Mandel Municipal Golf Course - and

even a fifth seeding to outlast players from

United, Alexander, McAllen and Calallen;

hitting twelve fairways, fourteen greens in

regulation and an amazing up and down on

a Par 3 to record a second round 75 to take

fourth place.

“I had 16 putts on the front nine and

17 on the back,” said the 2018 State

Qualifier, “I hit fifteen pars and three

bogeys. I had a bad break and had a penalty

on Hole #1. The course was really windy. It

was worse than yesterday (at the Laredo

Country Club), but I was able to keep the

ball down.”

Ibarra said he hit the ball well and

was believing in his game.

He almost had an Eagle on a Par 4

from 66 yards out, “I spun it back 25 feet

and it passed by really close to the hole. I

thought it might go in, but it passed by five

feet from the pin.”

A very strong St. Augustine squad

had two players in first and third place overall,

Horacio Perez placed first with a 148,

Harlingen’s Nicholas Galvan was second

with a 150 and Marcelo Garza was third

with a 152. Ibarra shot a two-day total of

153.
