Mission: Border Hope Conducting Assessments for Flood Victims

Commissioner Gerardo “Jerry “ Morales would like to inform the residents of Pct. 1( Siwel, Cedar Dr., Branch Circle, Lewis St., and Rafael St. located in Las Quintas Fronterizas) that Border Hope is conducting assessments for all flood victim families that have not received any help for material losses by the recent flood according to Administrative Assistant Carmen Ponce. They will be held at the Masonic Lodge on 2081 Flowers St., Monday thru Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “Effective communication is crucial to ensure that people impacted by natural disasters receive the assistance they need.” If you’d like more information about this topic, or to schedule an interview with Mr. Gerardo Morales, please call their office at 773-7262.
Acting on action sponsored by citizens of Loma Bonita, Commissioner Roberto Ruiz placed an item on last Monday Commissioners’ court in regards to place a Maverick County Sheriff Deputy sub-station on the Self Help Center location. Maverick County Sheriff Tom Schmerber asserted to the commissioner that he will be more than glad to have his deputy’s patrol and maintain the areas outside the city limits of Eagle Pass. Sheriff Schmerber agreed he considers a privilege working with the patrolling duties of the constable of precinct four. Lately there has been a number of illegal activities on this area including drug distribution and traffic of Illegal aliens. According to Ruiz the locale will also house the Constable of Pct. 4 Joe Regalado and his alternate deputy constables. Constable Regalado said, “my intentions are to help the citizens of our immediate area as well as my duties to work in conjunction with the J.P. of Precinct 4 Tere Melendrez, which are to issue citations and activate civil process as well as crime prevention and patrolling the area”. According to the commissioner the substation should be readily available within three to four weeks on Boulder Street within the Loma Bonita area of the precinct. “We will be inviting the U.S. Border Patrol to use or simply come by and share the facilities of the Loma Bonita Sheriff Sub Station- this kind of activities will help to assure the local folks that local law enforcement forces are taking active role in crime prevention”, concluded Commissioner Roberto Ruiz.
City Manager weighs in on EPPD Chief search

Ten have submitted their applications for Eagle Pass Police Chief according to City Manager Gloria Barrientos. The position has officially been closed and administration is presently generating a battery of questions which will be utilized to screen the finalists for the position. According to Barrientos many of the applicants are in fact from out of town and may need to make arrangements to attend their individual interviews and/or make arrangements to be interviewed via phone. "We would've ideally liked to have our new chief by the end of the fiscal year which is quickly approaching, so we are hoping to hire this person by October or November, but if they are working they may need time to be ready to report for their interview which may also take some time."
