The Silver & Black Attack CC Winn Mavericks defeated the visiting LBJ Wolves by a score of 14-4 on Friday at the EPISD Sports Complex.

LBJ jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Winn responded with three of their own when Leo Lopez reached on an error followed by a hit by Luis Ramirez who has been stinging the ball as of late.  Another Maverick who absolutely cannot be contained has been Ricardo Gonzalez, the fabulous freshman who has been torching District 29-AAAAA pitching.

After Lopez was driven in on Gonzalez' singel, Carlos Barrera cleared the bases with a one out triple into deep center field to score Carlos Cerezo and Gonzalez to put the Mavs up 3-2 after one.

It would be up to Maverick hurler Antonio Longoria to hold off the purpe and gold and indeed he did allowing no runs on only one hit through the fifth.

The Mavericks generated four more runs in their half of the second when Christian Perez got on with a single, Ivan Lopez drew a walk as did cousin Leo to load the bases and a run would score on a bases loaded walk to Ramirez.  Ricardo Gonzalez would drive in two more with a hit and Cerezo would score yet again on a wild pitch to make it Winn 7 LBJ 2.

Coach Gene Flores reached into his bag of tricks and scored a run on a double steal which plated Perez when Jonathan Villarreal drew the lBJ defense into him to give Villarreal the opportunity.

The Mavericks continued their onslaught in their half of the fifth on a two out error which put Leo Lopez on base, then Villarreal doubled to score Lopez and Isaac Banda drilled a hit to score Villarreal.

The Mavs put the game away in the sixth with another barrage of offense when Ramirez led off with a hit, Gonzalez got on on an error, Barrera continued his tear with yet another double to score Cerezo for his third run of the game.  Big Reick Perez came through for the Mavs when called upon with a hit to drive in Ricardo Gonzalez.  Juan Elizondo who came home on another delayed steal to seal the deal 14-4.

Longoria gets his first district win of the season as the Mavs travel to Laredo on Tuesday to face the loop-leading Laredo United Longhorns.

Top hitters for the Mavericks were Carlos Barrera who went 2 for 4 with two doubles, Ricardo Gonzalez 2 for 2 with five runs attributed to his production, two scored and three driven in, Christian Perez 2 for 4, Jonathan Villarreal 2 for 4 and Erick Perez and Isaac Banda 1 for 1.

The CC Winn Lady Mavericks dropped a heartbreaker on Friday as the Del Rio Queens behind the pitching of Ari Galvan as the Queens chased Brittany Perez for six runs on 13 hits when Galvan opened up the top of the first with a hit followed by two putouts, one by Ronnie Valdez and the other by Rosemary Hernandez, but DH Noemi Rosas got another hit to drive in Galvan followed by Caro Cruz reaching on an error and Clarissa Leon with a base-clearing triple.  3-0 DR after a half inning.

Galvan held the Lady Mavs at bay for two, and then the Queens got two more on four hits in their half of the second to go up 5-0, but Winn would not go down without a fight and they stormed back with three runs in the bottom of the fourth on a single by Ari Ruiz, another by Valdez and the swift Alyssa Lopez reached on an error by the Queen second baseman.

Maverick catcher Lorena Sanchez got a shot of her own to drive in Lopez with the third Mav run, 6-3 after four.

It was in the seventh and final at bat for Winn that the Lady Mavericks made a run that could've decided the game or at least extra innings as Giselle Cerda and Caridad Garcia got on base with hits followed by a bunt by Amberly Garza to move them over into scoring position.  Coach Varela's strategy worked because both Cerda and Garcia would eventually come in to score, one on a sacrifice by Rosemary Hernandez.

It was on the last play of the game with Garza on third that Galvan escaped with a one run victory when she got the dangerous Ariana Ruiz to ground out to third baseman Jackie Montejano who was barely able to throw Ruiz out at first for the last out of the game.

The Lady Mavs travel to Laredo on Thursday to take on Laredo Alexander.
