DEL RIO, Texas – U.S. Border Patrol agents from Del Rio Sector are assisting in rescue efforts in the Houston area, in the wake of Hurricane Harvey.
Local firefighters help with Harvey flooding
More and more assistance is needed to rescue people trapped as catastrophic rains brought on by Hurricane Harvey continue.
Eagle Pass firefighters Adrian Davila, Joe Garza, and Eduardo Alvarez will be traveling to San Antonio to be part of the ambulance staging crew.
“What they do is as ambulances from all over the state start arriving they start staging those ambulances and giving them orders of where they’re going to be headed,” said Fire Chief Manuel Mello. “It’s the main hub of where all ambulances go and meet.”
Mello said the men will most likely be sent for approximately five days to the Houston and Galveston areas where much of the damage is being seen.
“There’s extensive flooding, there’s a need for boats out there to do evacuations, there’s a lot of people that were stranded in their houses, in their community,” said Mello. “There’s a lot of devastation. This is something that’s going to be there for days to come.”
The Maverick County Sheriff’s Department will also be sending assistance to flooded areas. Two deputies are being sent to Victoria, two more to Houston, and one to Corpus Christi to help with security needs, said Sheriff Schmerber.
The situation will be assessed, but it is very likely that deputies will be sent to the severely damaged communities for up to five months, he added.

Retention ponds to be installed behind EPJH
Staff Reports
Several months ago, the City of Eagle Pass opened a road called Eagle Crossing that connects Flowers Street to Bibb Street. The street, although convenient for drivers, makes it easier for the area to flood, causing rain runoff to run much stronger and without control, and is a large problem for residents.
Assistant to the City Manager Ivan Morua said the city has begun digging two retention ponds behind Eagle Pass Junior High. Respecting the City of Eagle Pass’ codes for flooding prevention, plans for the retention ponds had previously been made.
However, they had not been constructed earlier because of fear it would affect students, as the project requires the use of heavy machinery.
According to Morua, this project began on Tuesday, and is expected to be completed by the time students return for classes.
The retention ponds will be installed with a pipeline so that when it rains the water that falls inside the ponds will be emptied out slowly, avoiding problems with flooding for area residents.
This project is between the city and EPISD, with the city being responsible for obtaining heavy machinery and labor, and the school district responsible for the expenses incurred by this project.
Construyen estanques de retención en EPJH
Staff Reports
