Community health centers continue to face funding shortages

The Community Health Investment Modernization Excellence Act which provides funding for community health centers, such as the United Medical Center, lapsed in September 2017 and did not meet its final deadline for approval. The funding was extended to provide organizations depending on this bill and the funding needed until March of this year.
Community Supports Project COMPANION Holiday Donation Drive
Over 850 lbs. of pet food and 140+ blankets collected to benefit local shelter pets
The cold weather did not stop the community from helping out local shelter pets as they generously donated bags of pet food, blankets, dog treats and toys. Project COMPANION volunteers were at the ready to collect the items which they will be distributing to both the City and County holding facilities over the upcoming months.

The Eagle Pass Chamber of Commerce hosted a ceremony for Maverick Nursing & Rehabilitation Center who was celebrating the renovation of their facility.
Emergency calls continue to increase within the community
Incident calls attended to by local law enforcement agencies continue increasing on a yearly basis, putting a strain on law enforcement departments and court systems as well.

No community turnout at MCHD tax increase public hearing

Not one taxpayer attended the Maverick County Hospital District public hearing held on Tuesday, September 5 regarding the proposed 2017-2018 tax rate which will go from the current tax rate of 9 cents per every $100 valuation, to 12.9 cents per every $100 valuation; an increase of 3.9 cents.
Community donates to hurricane victims

Wal Mart , Maverick County and the News Gram, along with countless volunteers organized a donation drive for the victims of Hurricane Harvey from Thursday August 31 through September 4 in the WalMart parking lot.

The City of Eagle Pass held a two-day Business & Economic Development committee orientation at the International Center for Trade with EMC Strategy Group on June 19 and 20, establishing committee needs, short and long term goals, comprehensive strategy and city master plan, and committee and sub-committee goals.
