The Texas Commission of Environmental Quality has finished their assessment and investigation into a complaint from February 15, 2017 of potential water contamination in part of the Maverick County Water District Canal lateral 20 Thompson Road area.

The Maverick County Commissioners Court held a meeting on Thursday, March 9, 2017 in which they discussed and took action to a Texas Commission of Environmental Quality Proposed Order issued on January 12, 2017, for violation of the Texas Health and Safety Code in regards to the accumulation and disposal of used scrap tires in two areas.

County task force meets over illegal dumping

The Maverick County Anti-Illegal Dumping Task Force held its first ever meeting on Monday, August 15.

Concern for the topic was obvious, with Justices of the Peace, constables, commissioners, deputies, and representatives from the Road and Bridge Department as well as the landfill present at the task force meeting.

Adding ‘insult to injury’

Despite thousands of people protesting outside Texas Commission on Environmental Quality headquarters in Austin, Texas, the wastewater discharge permit renewal and expansion for the Dos Republicas coal mine were approved.

On Wednesday, July 6, Native groups, elected officials, and environmental and social justice advocates held a demonstration and press conference to show their disapproval of the mine, specifically the pollution of Elm Creek and the Rio Grande River with toxic chemicals and heavy metals that make the water unsafe for drinking and recreation.
